Hulu has dropped a new trailer for The Great's upcoming season 2. The Great, which is very loosely based on the ascent to power of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great, stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. The show originated as a play by Tony McNamara, and it wasn't until 2018 that Hulu ordered an adaptation of McNamara's work. The Great premiered in May 2020 as a miniseries, but due to its favorable critical reception and appreciable viewership, it was picked up for season 2.
Scheduled to premiere on November 19, 2021, season 2 picks up the story from where season 1 had left. In the new show, after leading a successful coup against her husband Peter (Hoult), Catherine (Fanning) will finally assume the throne of Russia. But ruling the country will turn out to be tougher than she had thought, as Catherine will be faced with the challenge of enlightening a country that's reluctant towards progress. The new queen will first need to bring change within her own allies, and that task will be made more difficult with the arrival of Catherine's mother, Joanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp (Gillian Anderson).
Now, Hulu has unveiled the full trailer for The Great season 2, and it previews Catherine's quest of establishing her rule over Russia. As shown in the trailer, Catherine is now in full control of Russia, but her ideology seems to contradict with presumably every person in her court and country. Catherine wants to run Russia with "compassion and reason," but the innate hostility of her people shows that it's only possible when hell freezes over. Take a look at the new trailer below.

While the new trailer does focus a lot on Catherine's role as a new empress, there is also a great emphasis on her evolving dynamic with her husband. After hating Peter for the most part of The Great season 1, Catherine seems to have developed a soft spot for him. She isn't on board with killing him, and Peter, too, seems to have become protective of Catherine, although that might just be because she is pregnant. In the trailer, Peter disapproves of Catherine's style of rule, and while Catherine doesn't seem to pay heed to his ideas, it can be felt that a unique allyship is fostered between them.
As the trailer depicts, Catherine sure has a lot to learn about running her country. She is diving in head-first with her idea of change, but before she can influence Russia, she'll need to embrace the influence that the country has on her. Catherine's approach is utopianistic, although some of her ideas may be downright delusional. And as the trailer shows, she will need to differentiate what's possible from what's not, especially when many fear that her reign will be short-lived. Season 1 was a hit among audiences, and now fans are counting on The Great season 2 to deliver the same ridiculous hilarity and stunning performances.
