Corruption Cards are one of the features in Back 4 Blood that help create a unique experience every time a new playthrough has begun. Like player cards, Corruption Cards impact Back 4 Blood's direct game experience by including additional modifiers to that part of the Act. Completing the Act with the Corruption Cards active rewards additional Copper, or they can simply provide a changing obstacle to overcome.
Corruption Cards are controlled by the Game Director in Back 4 Blood. The job of the Game Director is to adjust gameplay based on the player's actions, increasing the challenges they are going to face as the next part of the Act begins. These cards affect every character in Back 4 Blood the same way. Corruption Cards are always selected by the Game Director, and players have a chance to review what cards are going to be in play before they select and approve their own deck.
There is a large variety of Corruption Cards in Back 4 Blood that can add any level of additional challenges in combination with one another. In addition to deciding which Corruption Cards will be active, the Game Director is in control of which enemies will spawn, and where. This level of control prevents players from being able to memorize which Ridden they can expect, as well as where hoards and other obstacles may spawn. Some of the major bosses, however, will still be present regularly in each Act as they're part of the story naturally.
Corruption Cards aren't anything that the player has control over, but they can benefit from completing some of the objectives of the Corruption Cards. Hopefully, a Back 4 Blood versus campaign will be included at some point in the future, where one player could control the same things as the Game Director in a 1-v-4 mode. Some Corruption Cards include additional tasks for players to focus on as they complete the Act, but these additional cards are completed with great risk. They often slow players down, pulling the focus of the team in multiple directions at once. Additionally, some Corruption Cards also have a direct impact on the map, such as adding a mist throughout the entire act or more birds to alert the horde.
While the Game Director starts off only being able to select two cards at a time, they gain an increased ability to select additional cards. Some other card types that the Game Director can choose from may benefit Ridden by providing them with armor, speed, health, and various damage resistances. These Ridden buffs can apply to common, special, and boss types of Ridden, enabling every Back 4 Blood campaign difficulty to truly be unique.
Back 4 Blood is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
