Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season one finale of Only Murders In The Building.
Fans of the Hulu series Only Murders In The Building knew that the season 1 finale would end with a dramatic, explosive surprise, and it's going to be tough to wait for season 2 after that wild final moment. The show is funny and fashionable, with Martin Short and Steve Martin showing their gifts for physical comedy and Selena Gomez's character Mabel Mora wearing colorful outfits. But every episode is full of dramatic scenes and big revelations, with fans wondering who killed Tim Kono and eager to learn more facts about the case.
While the show is a smart look at the art of podcasting, the true crime genre, and how unlikely friendships can form anytime, it's also a show all about plot twists. From huge discoveries about Mabel's past to new information about Tim, these revelations are totally shocking.
10 Theo Kidnaps Mabel And Oliver
The seventh episode "The Boy from 6B" is a well-crafted episode, giving fans some insight into Theo Dimas, Teddy's son. It also involves a major plot twist: Theo kidnapping Oliver Putnam and Mabel.
This isn't quite as powerful as some other moments on the series, since it feels inevitable that the podcasting trio would get in trouble at some point. But it still packs a punch and makes it feel like they're in danger because they're looking into Tim's murder.
9 Tim Knew That Oscar Didn't Kill Zoe
Tim Kono and Zoe Cassidy are two of the most relatable Only Murders In The Building characters, and they both died in tragic ways. As season 1 progresses, viewers find out that Mabel is still grieving the loss of her two good friends as they used to try to solve crimes in the building as a team. When Tim throws Zoe's cause of death into question, it's a huge and unforgettable plot twist.
It turns out that Tim knew that Oscar was innocent and that Zoe was arguing with another person prior to falling off the Arconia's roof. This is unfortunate to hear, as Oscar went to prison for Zoe's murder, and Mabel is not only shocked but super upset to learn this information. There's an even bigger plot twist about Zoe's death, though.
8 Oliver's Dog Is Poisoned
At the end of the third episode called "How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?" Oliver learns that his beloved dog, Winnie, has been poisoned.
This comes on the heels of Howard's cat being poisoned as well, which makes the trio wonder if it's the same person. It's an equally shocking and heartbreaking moment that proves that Oliver is really in danger and that looking into Tim's murder could end his life, too.
7 Theo And Zoe Knew Each Other
Like some smart flashbacks used on sitcoms, this Hulu series allows viewers to see what life was like at the Arconia before Tim died and before the trio began investigating.
Zoe's flashbacks show her as a mysterious person who people can never really get to know. Although it's a big moment to learn that Zoe and Theo Dimas knew each other before her death, and he might have had a crush on her, there are some other plot twists that feel more shocking.
6 The Dimas's Grave Robbing Business
It's sad to learn that Teddy and Theo Dimas aren't the good, warm-hearted people that they appear to be at first, and when there are a few episodes left of season 1, fans learn that the Dimas have been stealing jewelry from people who passed away.
When compared to the other big revelations on this show, it's not quite as stunning as some discoveries that involve the three main characters. It's still pretty dramatic, though, as it calls into question how well Oliver knows Teddy and who he has been working with all of these years.
5 Theo Pushed Zoe Off The Arconia's Roof
There are some hilarious Only Murders In The Building characters and then there are some who are cold-hearted killers or mean-spirited people. This enables the show to be both humorous and unnerving with every episode.
In "The Boy From 6B," fans find out that Theo was the one who pushed Zoe off the roof of the Arconia. While it wasn't on purpose, this fact does change everything, as Mabel realizes that Oscar is innocent and that she has been thinking about this situation completely wrong. This is definitely more surprising than learning about Theo and Zoe's secret romance.
4 Charles Finds Jan After She Was Stabbed
It's unfortunate that Jan ends up being Tim's murderer considering how sweet her relationship with Charles is at first. While some people suspected Jan right away, others hoped that she would turn out to be a good person since Charles had been alone for several years.
When Charles finds Jan lying on the floor and thinks that she has been stabbed, it's an amazing plot twist that sends in the show in a thrilling direction. It's definitely one of the most significant since fans later learn that Jan is a horrible person who hurt herself.
3 Jan And Tim's Affair Is Revealed
Of all the show's potential suspects, Jan is particularly well-crafted and her romance with Charles seems too good to be true. Could Charles really find love with a neighbor who he has heard playing her bassoon in the courtyard for years?
When fans find out that Jan and Tim had an affair, it's a wild revelation that points to Jan being the killer, and there is no turning back from this information. Sadly, Charles is by himself again, but this time, he feels ready to get back out into the dating scene which is sweet to watch.
2 Mabel, Charles, And Oliver Are Arrested For Bunny's Murder
It's not so great when a series finale is vague, and that sometimes happens at the end of a season as well. Thankfully, Only Murders In The Building does a great job of preparing fans for season 2 by showing the three main characters getting arrested for the murder of their neighbor Bunny.
While this scene was foreshadowed earlier in the season, it's still scary and surprising to see Mabel, Charles, and Oliver in such a bind. Fans can't wait to watch the next season and hope that they find a way to break free.
1 Mabel And Tim Used To Be Friends
The biggest plot twist in season 1 of Only Murders In The Building is definitely the realization that Mabel and Tim were friends. When Charles and Oliver begin working on the true crime podcast with Mabel, they would never have guessed that she actually knew Tim, and this changes the whole game.
With this personal connection to the Arconia's huge tragedy, Mabel is determined to find out what happened, and her new friends are just as passionate about solving the crime. As soon as fans learn that Mabel and Tim were in a group called "The Hardy Boys" together, it's impossible to not want to binge the entire season.
