The New Superman Reunites With Robin For One Last Mission

In an upcoming one-shot special from DC Comics, the new Superman and Robin will be reuniting for one last mission. A lot has changed in recent months for Jon Kent and Damian Wayne, the respective sons of Superman and Batman. However, one of the biggest ones is that Jon's Superboy has grown up at a much faster rate than Damian's Robin, resulting in this final mission depicting them as Superman & Robin for this new issue as opposed to the younger Super Sons they once were.

While Jon Kent and Damian Wayne used to be close to the same age and would often partner together as the Super Sons, Jon Kent was eventually offered a position with the Legion of Superheroes in the future. Staying there for quite a bit of time, Jon would return to the present having aged up quite a bit, already a young man ready to take over the mantle of Superman from his father who's recently left Earth for an extended period to face Mongul and Warworld. In contrast, Damian has been aging normally while also having gone down a dark path, so much so that he's been estranged from his own father despite the Dark Knight desperately wanting to reconnect and reconcile. While Jon and Damian have gotten together a few times since Jon's been back from the future, this upcoming Superman & Robin special issue will reportedly be their final mission together.

Superman & Robin Special #1 will be coming from writer Peter J. Tomasi and artist Viktor Bogdanovic and will see Superman facing a darkness from his past that will require Robin as some much-needed backup. While the Super Sons are no more, it should be fairly exciting to see the duo getting back together as Superman and Robin, potentially with new partner dynamics as a result. Here's the variant cover from artist Jorge Jimenez and solicitation info for the upcoming January issue:

  • As the Super Sons, Jon Kent and Damian Wayne put evil to bed…past its bedtime. But a new day has dawned, and Jon Kent is now the Superman of Metropolis—all grown up and fighting for truth, justice, and the kinds of grown-up things that Superboy was only beginning to understand as a child. Now a ghost from Jon's past has reared its head, and to battle this evil, he'll need to reunite with Robin for one last mission into the heart of darkness. This time they'll be battling not as Super Sons, but as Superman and Robin! This thrilling adventure is written by acclaimed Super Sons scribe Peter J. Tomasi!

While "one last mission into the heart of darkness" does sound exciting for the new Superman and Robin, it's not yet clear why this will be their last mission in the first place. Will one of them be leaving or quitting as a superhero? Seeing as how Jon just became the new Superman, it's more likely that Damian could be ending his career as Robin given his recent struggles with his own identity.

Either way, it's going to be pretty exciting to see the older versions of the Super Sons back in action as Superman and Robin. After all, Jon Kent and Damian Wayne are the next generation of DC's World's Finest. Here's hoping the new Superman and Robin manage to save the day as they embark on one last adventure when their special issue releases on January 25th.
