DWTS: Cheryl Burke Reveals Which Dances She Likes Best And Least

Dancing With The Stars professional dancer Cheryl Burke has participated in 24 seasons of the show, and she is now revealing which dances she likes best and least. Cheryl began her career on the show in 2006 in season 2 when she was paired with Drew Lachey. They took the ballroom by storm, stunning the judges week after week with their impressive routines. It was no surprise when they won. The following year, Cheryl danced with Emmitt Smith, and once again took home the Mirrorball Trophy. Although she has not won the competition since then, she came close when she placed second in season 8 with Gilles Marini andseason 13 with Rob Kardashian. She has been a dedicated partner to all of her pairings and is known for her challenging and innovative dances.

This season, the 37-year-old dances with Cody Rigsby. Cheryl and Cody faced some adversity in Weeks 2 and 3, as they both had to quarantine after being diagnosed with breakthrough COVID-19. They were able to remain in the competition by being judged on their rehearsal footage in the second week and then dancing virtually from their homes in Week 3. The video dance was a first for the show, but they were able to persevere, and are now fan favorites. So far, Cody and Cheryl have danced the tango, salsa, jazz, jive, Viennese waltz, quickstep, cha-cha-cha and foxtrot. Although the judges tend to score them on the lower side, they have praised them for their continued growth in the competition.

Although Cheryl makes every dance look entertaining and effortless, in an interview with Heavy, she confessed that she does like some dance styles better than others. She revealed that the Latin dances are her favorites, and they were her specialty before she joined the show, when she competed all over the world in the Latin category. She explained that she was so excited when the show added the Argentine tango in season 8, that she went to Argentina during the show's hiatus to learn how to do it properly. She said, "I decided to go to Argentina and be part of this Argentine tango company called ‘Forever Tango’ that was on Broadway. And I learned nothing is manipulated in Argentine tango; it’s very strict. It was really fun." After so many seasons on the show, Cheryl was "hungry to learn" something new, and she fell in love with Argentine tango, now stating, "it is one of my favorite dances."

Cheryl's least favorite dance is also a Latin dance. In ballroom competition, there are five Latin dances, the cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and, surprisingly, the jive. Cheryl said that she doesn't understand why the jive is considered a Latin dance, saying, "I just feel like to put jive as part of the five Latin American dances doesn’t fit for me. I wish someday they could switch that out for Argentine tango." She revealed that the jive is her least favorite dance and admitted that she doesn't like how it requires dancers to perform tricks throughout the routine. Cheryl explained, "My least favorite is jive, actually, I really don’t love it. There’s a stylized jive that I do that’s more like west coast swing, and [jive is] all kicks and flicks and jumps and splits. I was never a trickster; I was much more of a grounded, sensual dancer."

Audiences would never know that Cheryl likes some dances better than others because she is such a professional on Dancing With The Stars. She puts all of her creativity and effort into every routine, and helps stars with no dance training to shine in the ballroom. Hopefully, she will have the opportunity to perform the dances she likes best as the season progresses. Even after 24 seasons, Cheryl has kept things fresh and innovative.
