Society Is Collapsing In Blumhouse's American Refugee Trailer

The new trailer for American Refugee features a family struggling to survive the collapse of society. American Refugee is a forthcoming thriller produced by Blumhouse Television from director Ali LeRoi, whose previous work includes helming numerous episodes of TV for shows like Everybody Hates Chris and the new Turner & Hooch series. The script was penned by first-time writers Allison and Nicolas Buckmelter, with a cast featuring Derek Luke, Erika Alexander, and Sam Trammell.

The trailer, which was shared on YouTube by Paramount Movies, sets up the stakes in American Refugee by showing the country in a state of unrest. As anarchy begins to reign, the Taylor family, headed by Greg (Luke) and Helen (Alexander), take shelter with their survivalist neighbor, Winter (Trammell), and his family. However, as supplies dwindle and tensions rise, Winter's rough-around-the-edges nature causes the Taylor family to question whether or not they're actually safe. Blumhouse is known for delivering thrills on a budget, and American Refugee looks to do the same. The story of society collapsing is grand in scope, though the film looks to contain the action to minimal rural locations. This is reminiscent of another Blumhouse film, The Purge, which featured a single day where all crime was legal across the country, yet the movie contained the action to a single house. If American Refugee is successful, Blumhouse may even have similar plans for a franchise, where, much like The Purge films, the sequels embrace the larger scale for the events at play in the world. American Refugee will be available to purchase digitally or stream via EPIX on December 10th.
