Spider-Man: No Way Home Is Dark, Sad & Brutal According To Tom Holland

Tom Holland has revealed that Spider-Man: No Way Home will be sad, dark, and brutal. The film will explore how Holland's Peter Parker deals with the fallout of Spider-Man: Far From Home's cliff-hanger ending, where his identity was exposed to the public following his confrontation with Mysterio. Spider-Man: No Way Home will be the next installment in the MCU's Phase 4 and is scheduled for release in mid-December.

The MCU's latest Spider-Man flick wrapped filming earlier in the year in March, and since then, anticipation for the film's release has coincided with a lot of speculation. The film is set to focus on the multiverse concept, like Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which has led to rumors about potential crossovers from previous on-screen versions of the superhero. The film will star Alfred Molina, who played Doc Ock during Tobey Maguire's run as Spider-Man in the 2000s, and Jamie Foxx, who appeared as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when Peter Parker was played by Andrew Garfield. There has been plenty of speculation on the return of the previous web-slingers themselves, although Holland and Kevin Feige have firmly denied the involvement of the two actors.

In an interview with Total Film, Holland has revealed more details about what fans can expect from the sequel. Stating that audiences will be "really surprised," Holland discussed how the film would "not [be] fun" and indicated that Spider-Man: No Way Home will be much darker than its predecessors. Holland also suggested that his Spider-Man will come up against his most formidable opponent (or opponents) so far, saying that Peter Parker has "met his match" in the upcoming film. Read Holland's full comments below:

"What people will be really surprised about is that it’s not fun, this film. It’s dark and it’s sad, and it’s going to be really affecting. You’re going to see characters that you love go through things that you would never wish for them to go through. And I was just really excited to kind of lean into that side of Peter Parker.

Peter Parker is always someone who’s looking up. He’s always really positive. He’s always like, 'I can fix this. I can do this.' Whereas in this film, he feels like he’s met his match. He’s like, 'I don’t know what to do.' That was an aspect of the character that I’d never seen before, and I was really, really excited to try to tackle.

I haven’t seen the film yet but I’ve seen pieces of the film, and it’s the best work we’ve ever done. It’s the best Spider-Man film that we’ve ever made. I really don’t think fans are at all ready for what they’ve put together. I know that I’m not ready, and I know that it’s going to be brutal."

The MCU's previous two Spider-Man films have been praised for successfully integrating humor and romance into their plots. However, Holland's comments appear to suggest that Spider-Man: No Way Home will be moving away from that formula. With the film's exploration of the multiverse, there are plenty of ways that Holland's Spidey could be challenged more than ever before, including by the return of iconic villains. The actor's comments about the emotional tone of the movie also raise questions about the fate of the film's beloved side characters, especially Zendaya's M.J.

Following Holland's comments, fans will be eager to learn more about the identity of Spider-Man's opponents in the film. Alongside Molina's Doc Ock and Electro, other villains that have been rumored to show up in Spider-Man: No Way Home include Sandman, Green Goblin, and Curt Connors. However, the villain's actors have been keen to downplay speculation to avoid fan disappointment if their characters don't appear in the movie. Whether or not previous villains or versions of Spider-Man do return, fans will be expecting a film that shows Peter Parker being tested like never before.
