Until Dawn: The Most Likable Characters, Ranked | ScreenRant

With the release of the newest installment in the Dark Pictures Anthology series, it's nice to revisit the game that inspired it all. Until Dawn may not have been the first game to implement the butterfly effect, but it was certainly one of the most original. It gave players the opportunity to hold every character's life in the palm of their hand, with one simple mistake causing them to easily kill off one or more of the cast.

Until Dawn is populated with a diverse cast who each have unique personalities that, at various points in the game, players will assume control of to determine the next stage of the narrative. Fans love and hate some of the characters for many different reasons but there's no denying that some of them are way more likable than others due to their bravery and kindness.

10 Dr. Hill

At the beginning of Until Dawn, which is similar in style to horror movies like My Bloody Valentine, Dr. Hill is a mysterious character. He starts off interviewing the player, trying to find out their fears. There's a lot of mystery around who he is, why he's asking so many questions, and how he knows so much.

Later in the game, players find out that he's much more the analyst. He was revealed to be Joshua's psychiatrist, who actually tried his best to prevent Josh from going through with his villainous revenge plan. Other than his sessions with Josh, players don't really know much about Dr. Hill. He's an intriguing character, but not really likable due to the professional distance he must keep with his patients.

9 Emily

Emily is that one character in Until Dawn who starts out annoying and remains that way for the entire game. It's clear that she's hung up on her ex-boyfriend, even though she has a new man in her life who treats her perfectly.

Not only that, but her fight with Jessica over boyfriend drama was certainly over the top. Fortunately, she's one of the easiest characters to kill off in the game. Emily's death scenes feel like they're from Final Destination, considering she has many unique ways to die. Keeping her alive requires a lot of skill that many first-time players probably wouldn't be able to pull off and, given her toxic personality, have no desire to save.

8 Josh

Josh started off the game as a character most players would feel bad for considering he lost his sister the previous year in a mysterious "accident." He's immediately viewed as an odd character who tends to make weird, cryptic comments, but it's easy to look past.

As the game went on, it's revealed that Josh has a lot of problems going on in his head, and certainly has some horrible ideas as jokes. He was responsible for tormenting his friends and playing sick pranks on them for the duration of the game, which easily makes him one of the least likable characters in the game. His only saving grace is his brief redemptive moment at the end of the game when he opts to save his friends' lives rather than his own.

7 Jessica

Jessica was introduced as the mean girl in Until Dawn. She's the one who came up with the idea to pull the prank on Hannah, which ended up resulting in her death. Jessica has a very strong personality in the game, and she's also confident in her looks, which many fans might like about her.

Over the course of the game, it is revealed that she does have a more sensitive side, depending on the player's choices. It's revealed that she cares for animals, and uses her sexuality as a shield to mask her insecurities. For a character that was introduced as shallow, Jessica surprisingly gained a lot of depth by the game's end.

6 Hannah And Beth

Hannah was the victim of Jessica's cruel joke and ended up being killed off very early in the game. Beth was her sister, who chased her into the woods and died alongside her.

Players don't get to know too much about Hannah or Beth considering they're hardly in the game, but in comparison to the rest of their friends, they appear to be much more kind. All that's really known about these two is that they cared for each other, and Hannah had a huge crush on Mike. Their inherent likability is what makes their quick deaths so tragic.

5 Ashley

Ashley was one of the nicer girls in the friend group. She was one of the least involved in the prank that killed Hannah, and also expressed huge regret about it later in the game. While Jessica and Emily were in constant drama, Ashley's storyline mostly revolved around her crush on Chris.

One of Ashley's downfalls is that she was a bit cowardly in the game. When Sam went missing, she was reluctant to search for her. She's also easily swayed by the decisions her friends make and can make some of the worst decisions that feel straight out of a horror movie. Still, her awkward romance with Chris makes her relatable and players usually care enough about her to try to prevent her death in the third act of the game.

4 Matt

Matt can be either cowardly or brave, depending on the choices the player makes. Overall, it's undeniable that he wants all of his friends to be happy and get along. He's also a huge pushover when it comes to his girlfriend Emily. He'd do anything she asks, even though she treats him terribly.

Almost all of his scenes in the game follow Matt and Emily's struggles, and Matt is definitely the lesser annoying character in those scenes. He may not be as loved as other characters in the game, but it's undeniable that he's a good person.

3 Chris

Chris was one of the most loyal friends in Until Dawn. It was obvious that he didn't want to leave any of his friends behind, and was always protective of those he cared about. He even refused to leave Sam behind when she was missing, which proved he's a loyal character.

One of the biggest challenges he faced in the game was having to choose between his best friend Joshua and his crush Ashley. If players make certain choices, it could even lead to him deciding to kill himself instead, which shows how much he cares for his friends.

2 Sam

Out of everyone, Sam was the only character who tried to prevent Jessica from playing the harsh prank on Hannah. She even ran off and tried to let Hannah know about the prank before it occurred, but failed to do so in time.

Sam was the sporty and most casual one in the group, and also one of the most neutral when it came to disagreements amongst the group. Even though Sam spent the majority of the game taking a bath, her caring personality and strong fight for survival make her one of the best final girls in horror, if players can keep her alive.

1 Mike

Mike started off the game as the typical jock character. He was one of the main participants in the prank that resulted in Hannah's death by being the guy who pretended to be interested in her. He was responsible for humiliating Hannah in front of everyone.

As the game progressed, he did become more of a central character who expressed regret at his past actions, which garnered sympathy from the rest of the characters and the audience. He ended up becoming protective of his friends and even the hero of the game at times. He often risked his life to save his friends and turned out to be much smarter than he originally seemed. Mike had the most notable character arc in the entire game, going from an insensitive athlete to Until Dawn's most likable character who has the potential to save everyone's life in the game.
