Only Murders In The Building: Each Characters Best Quote From Season 1

Warning: This article contains spoilers.

Hulu's Only Murders In The Building features a stellar cast and an intriguing, funny plot that builds up tension superbly throughout its ten-episode run. Each character shines on their own, and they are perfectly balanced out when together.

Filled with wit, dark humor, and shocking twists, the show's characters have many great lines. The main trio in particular have epic quotes, usually in the form of hilarious one-liners, but the surrounding characters also offer many great moments of dialog to choose from.

10 Sting: "Oh, My God. What A Relief!"

In the episode fittingly titled "The Sting", Sting himself is racked with guilt because he believes that he is to blame for Tim Kono's apparent suicide. However, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel know that Tim's death was in fact a homicide, and thus believe Sting was responsible.

The exchange between these characters is loaded with tension, as the amateur sleuths think they've honed in on their murder suspect, only for Sting to get upset and reveal his only interaction with Tim was to shout at him. Being no closer to the truth, the trio is frustrated as Sting lets out a sigh and visibly relaxes, not caring that Tim was murdered, but more relieved that he's not to blame.

9 Teddy Dimas: "I Realized The Beauty Of Silence. It Makes For Beautiful Friendships And Partnerships..."

"...when those who may know certain things about you can act as if they never heard those things." Teddy offers this disguised threat to Mabel and Oliver in the episode "Fan Fiction", and it furthers the idea that he is the murder suspect they have been searching for.

While it turns out that Teddy wasn't involved in Tim's death, the threat scares Mabel and Oliver enough to try to solve the murder once and for all overnight, so that they can expose Teddy before he can hurt them. With Teddy's usual charm in place, the quote is ominous and outlines him as a villainous character, whether he killed Tim or not.

8 Bunny: "The Rest Of You, If You're A Murderer... Stop Murdering!"

Bunny's character is centered around her job as a board member of the Arconia, and she often places the importance of the role above other, less trivial things, such as murder. Her distaste towards Oliver, Charles, and Mabel and their interest in Tim Kono's death that ricochets throughout the building reaches its peak in "Double Time".

Blunt, and to the point, Bunny demands this of the residents of Arconia, after triumphantly declaring the trio's eviction notices. It's a funny and dry moment that truly shows how important Bunny's job is to her, and demonstrates that she only cares for the murderer to stop rather than to actually catch the killer.

7 Detective Williams: "I Swear To God, If I Meet One More True Crime Nut..."

No nonsense, and probably one of the most relatable characters in the show, Detective Williams says this in the very first episode, "True Crime". Passing by Oliver, Mabel, and Charles after she's caught them in the building when they should be outside with the rest of the residents, she mutters this line passive-aggressively under her breath.

The moment is great, as not only does plant the seed in the trio's heads that they should start their own podcast, but it also exemplifies Detective Williams personality. It shows the growth in her character too, as by the end of the show, she is actually helping the true crime nuts prove that Tim's death was not a suicide, thanks to the findings ironically presented in their podcast.

6 Howard Morris: "I For One, Am Grateful For The F**kwads."

Howard's character is a quirky and funny one, who often is too preoccupied with the death of his beloved cat to care about the other events happening in the building. However, in the penultimate episode, "Double Time", Howard stands up for Mabel, Oliver, and Charles after they're alerted of their imminent eviction.

The quote is obviously funny, and surprises everyone in the room. However, the line also leads Howard to announce that the reason he's grateful for them is because they helped discover how his cat was killed, so it's also not completely out of character.

5 Oscar: "Just Because You Aren't Locked Up, Doesn't Mean You're Not In Some Kind Of Prison."

Said in a voice-over, Oscar says this line after getting into an argument with Mabel in the episode "Twist". For a character who isn't always part of the main events that are going on, he benefits from the position of being an outsider because he has some much-needed perspective.

Said perhaps in reference to Mabel's obsession with finding out who killed Tim as the voice-over would suggest, the line shows Oscar's understanding of Mabel and acceptance of his own past. It introduces his character to the show as a kind and empathetic one, too.

4 Jan: "Hello. I'm A Sucker For Lonely Guys With Notable Age Differences I Meet On Elevators."

In one of the show's biggest plot twists, Jan is revealed to be the murderer the trio has been looking for. The revelation should be a quiet, dark moment between Jan and Charles, and yet Jan appears ridiculously happy that Charles has unearthed her secret.

The scene is playful in tone, as Jan coaxes Charles to go through the night she killed Tim and even gets excited each time he figures out a different clue. This line epitomizes Jan's status as a sadistic murderer as she causally recalls the events with a barely disguised glee, with this simple explanation of why she was drawn to Tim in the first place said with a knowing, ironic look towards Charles.

3 Mabel Mora: "I Mean, A Murderer Probably Lives In The Building, But I Guess Old White Guys Are Only Afraid Of Colon Cancer And Societal Change."

Selena Gomez plays Mabel with perfect parts dry sarcasm and wit, and this tongue-in-cheek comment is the perfect example. Throughout the show, Mabel has many great lines, but this quote, uttered in the episode "Who Is Time Kono?" is her best.

Said to Oliver and Charles, the line perfectly embodies Mabel's dry sense of humor and view of the world. As it's stated in the show's second episode, it also does well to set out Mabel's personality and introduce her as a witty and humorously cynical character.

2 Oliver Putnam: "Oh, My God, The Twists And Turns Of This Are Unbelievable. It's Like A Rainbow Crafted By A Drunken Leprechaun."

Oliver is undoubtedly one of the show's funniest characters, with his over-the-top exclamations and exuberant personality. Throughout the series, he constantly produces hilarious lines, usually with a dramatic flair thanks to his theater background and his need for everything to be podcast-ready.

In true Oliver fashion, he flamboyantly delivers this quote in the episode "To Protect And Serve" with a comparison only he could draw, as the Mabel reveals a stash of jewelry Tim had hidden in his apartment. In a tense moment, Oliver, as always, breaks the ice with his hilarious take on the situation.

1 Charles Haden-Savage: "You Won't Shoot My Friends. Shoot Me If You Need To, But Not Them. Because I Don't Want To Live In A World Without Them."

Like Mabel, Charles is oftentimes sarcastic and cynical, but, by the end of the series, he seems to have grown more comfortable in expressing his emotions - kind of. Charles says this line to Jan in "Open And Shut" in a heroic act, where he seemingly breaks free of the effect of poison he has ingested and stands up to her in defiance.

It's a sweet moment where Charles realizes that he's finally made some true friends, and he's willing to die for them. What makes the quote even greater is that it's actually happening inside his head as the poison is still very much in effect, which adds some great comedic relief to an otherwise tense scene.
