Call Of Duty Gameplay Trailers & Blackout Progression Revealed

The release date for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is quickly approaching, and with it are a couple of new videos, including a launch trailer and a music video. Additionally, developer Treyarch disclosed a few details about their Blackout battle royale mode, specifically that there will be no traditional Prestige option as there is in the regular multiplayer.

This upcoming blockbuster game will lack a single-player campaign, instead focusing on three pillars of gameplay: the competitive multiplayer, a zombies mode, and the aforementioned Blackout mode. The multiplayer and Blackout modes each underwent through their own periods of closed beta testing, with the latter beta ending for console and PC users last week, and overall enjoying a positive reception. But there's still quite a bit that's unknown about the game.

With no single-player or story material to show, the launch trailer instead focused on the variety of multiplayer experiences that the game will have to offer. As beta participants experienced for themselves, the trailer shows off the gadgets, point-streak reward gadgets, and Specialist abilities that the game's multiplayer mode offers. The trailer promises the mode to be "the next evolution in multiplayer." Take a look:

The trailer also contains some footage of the new zombies mode, which will have three different experiences at launch. These will represent a new zombies mythology separate from Treyarch's previous storyline, which started with Call of Duty: World at War and continued through the first three Black Ops games. These experiences as seen in the launch trailer are "IX," which takes place on a Roman battle arena, "Voyage of Despair," and "Blood of the Dead." The "IX" scenario also gained its own music video, with Avenged Sevenfold’s single, “Mad Hatter,” which will feature in their EP Black Reign. This EP has all four songs that the band wrote for each of the four Black Ops games.

Finally, Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar had much to reveal about Blackout in an extensive video interview with Game Informer based on questions from fans. While Vonderhaar was unable to confirm any details on elements that Treyarch was still in the midst of deciding on, such as final player count for Blackout, he did relay some new information about the game mode's progression system. While Call of Duty multiplayer modes traditionally have a Prestige option, where players reset their progress after reaching the maximum level, this will not be the case for Blackout. Instead, players can reach the max level of 80 in Blackout based on their performance and get what Vonderhaar calls "the granddaddy of prizes," with prizes on the way to that max level being new character skins to play as. "So there is a finality to the progression," Vonderhaar tells Black Ops fans.

While trailers featuring rock music and absurd zombies modes may be the standard for the Call of Duty franchise, Black Ops 4 is changing the formula slightly by omitting a single-player campaign and introducing a battle royale mode unique for the franchise. With a mix of old and new, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is Treyarch's way of trying to break new ground and take a few risks for their long-running Black Ops subseries.
