Dark Phoenix Teaser Trailer Unveils First Footage Of New X-Men Movie

UPDATE: Read our breakdown of the Dark Phoenix trailer.

The first trailer for Dark Phoenix shows Simon Kinberg's attempt to get the X-Men comic arc right. Twentieth Century Fox rebooted the X-Men franchise in a smart way a few years ago by going back in time. The reboot saw Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) play the leads, and gave many other important roles too. One of the more recent additions is Sophie Turner as Jean Gray and she's now the star, after first appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse, as the studio once again attempts to tell the Dark Phoenix saga.

The decision to reboot gives them another shot at the story, after missing the mark with X-Men: The Last Stand. Kinberg wrote the previous attempt but is now both writing and directing. Some have been concerned about the movie after Fox pushed it back to early 2018 with reshoots for Dark Phoenix that just began, causing concern for the film. The additional filming and lack of marketing only made the leaked Dark Phoenix trailer more of a shock.

Turner was a guest on The Late Late Show with James Corden and brought the first official trailer for Dark Phoenix with her, just as she said she would earlier today. She is understandably the focal point of the trailer, as Jean's younger days are contrasted by her current powerful state. But, since this is still an X-Men movie, there's several looks at the rest of the cast members as well. Take a look at the trailer below.

As far as a first trailer goes, Dark Phoenix delivers what you'd expect. It lays out most of the story, one that is familiar to comic readers, but even to those that remember The Last Stand. We get to see Jean Grey's origin and first encounter with Charles Xavier, which isn't the first time a red-headed young girl has showed up at his mansion. The familiarity continues with Charles telling Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) that he's attempted to stabilize Jean's powers, but this won't last. A trip into space appears to unlock the Phoenix and sets Dark Phoenix on its path.

From there on, the plot is only further set up. Jean goes to Genosha to meet Magneto and seek his help. The X-Men arrive in their brand new costumes and it looks like a battle happens there on the mutant inhabited island. Teases of a major death and just a few glimpses at Jessica Chastain's mysterious shapeshifting (possibly Skrull) character continue to fill out the trailer.

Everything that is shown is likely from the first two acts of the movie, with the third act reportedly the focus of the reshoots. That could explain why Jean's full Phoenix powers are just teased instead of fully shown. But, there's still plenty to dive in on with what the trailer presents. Stay tuned for a full Dark Phoenix trailer breakdown now that the marketing campaign has officially begun.
