Disney Streaming's High Fidelity Series Casts Zoë Kravitz

Zoë Kravitz is both starring in and producing a High Fidelity series for Disney's streaming service. The novel High Fidelity was published by Nick Hornby in 1995 and adapted for the big screen five years later by director Stephen Fears. John Cusack (who also cowrote the film) starred in Frear's adaptation as Rob Gordon, a fellow who runs a record store and knows just about everything there is to know about pop music... yet is utterly clueless as to why his romantic relationships keep going off the rails.

The High Fidelity movie was released by Disney's Touchstone Pictures, which is how the Mouse House ended up with the screen rights to the property in the first place. They're now putting the IP to new use by developing a TV adaptation, which will premiere on Disney's streaming service when it launches sometime late next year. As previously reported, the series will span 10 episodes in its first season and feature a gender-swapped version of Cusack's High Fidelity character as its main protagonist.

THR is confirming that Kravitz will play the series' lead, though details beyond that are being kept under-wraps for the time being. The High Fidelity show was created by writers/producers Sarah Kucserka and Veronica West (Ugly Betty, Hart of Dixie) and is expected to be one of the first Original Series that Disney offers through its as-yet unnamed streaming service. The service's roster will further include original series like Jon Favreau's live-action Star Wars TV show, as well as series based on the High School Musical and Monsters, Inc. properties.

Kravitz is no stranger to the small screen herself, having previously costarred in Big Little Lies season 1 and played a recurring role on Californication. She will reprise her Big Little Lies role when the second season launches on HBO next year, some time after she formally joins the Wizarding World by playing Leta Lestrange in this fall's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. All in all, Kravitz is an excellent get for the High Fidelity series, not least of all because her career is on the up and up right now and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

A gender-swapped take on High Fidelity sounds equally intriguing, if only because it will feature the sort of female protagonist (ie. an extreme hobbyist who has turned their obsession into a livelihood) that's still rarely seen in pop culture. Hopefully, the series will further retain the format of Frears' movie by having Kravitz continuously monologue about her misadventures in love and/or the record store business to the camera. That alone would offer an acting challenge that should allow Kravitz - and, in turn, the show itself - to really stand out as something special and unique among Disney's original streaming projects.
