Five months after the release of Avengers: Infinity War, the subtitle for next year's Avengers 4 is still a mystery - but right now Eternity War is the most likely guess. We've had a few theories about what the title could be, with End Game being a particularly popular choice among fans. However, based on what we know about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with clues dropped by directors Anthony and Joe Russo, it's looking ever more likely that Infinity War could be followed by Eternity War.
Marvel Studios has done an impressive job of keeping the movie's full title under wraps so far. Studio boss Kevin Feige has even admitted that they might have done too good a job. Shortly before the release of Infinity War, Feige lamented, "It's gotten entirely out of hand... It sort of backfired, if I'm honest with you, because the notion was to not talk about it so the focus was to be on [Infinity War]."

There's still a long wait for the next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Captain Marvel, so fans are continuing to pass the time by guessing at Avengers 4's title. Reddit users Paperchampion23 and TMKTanner have both proposed Avengers: Eternity War - and there's a pretty compelling argument for it.

Avengers: Eternity War Fits The Time Travel Plot
Avengers: Infinity War's title was obviously a reference to the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet, which Thanos ultimately used to wipe out half of all life in the universe. While there's very little official information out there about the plot of Avengers 4, set photos show the cast filming the Battle of New York - the climactic fight of 2012's The Avengers - all over again, with Chris Evans in his old Captain America costume and Ant-Man incongruously present. Based on these photos, and the fact that Avengers 4 will need to bring at least some of the deceased characters back to life (Spider-Man has a solo movie out next year), the obvious conclusion is that the remaining Avengers will somehow utilize time travel to undo Thanos' horrible work.
Avengers: Eternity War and The Eternals
Avengers 4 will not only wrap up more than a decade of storytelling within the MCU, but also set the stage for Phase Four of the franchise. Beyond Spider-Man: Far From Home (the next film after Avengers 4), we currently know very little about what's in store for the MCU, and what kind of direction it will take. One of the projects we do know about, however, is The Eternals. The Eternals are a godlike race of beings in Marvel Comics, and Thanos just happens to be one of them. There have been rumors that another Eternal, Kronos, will make an appearance in Avengers 4. Moreover, Marvel has just hired Chloé Zhao to direct The Eternals and is reportedly moving quickly with the film, making it all the more likely that the groundwork for The Eternals will be laid in Avengers 4.
Eternity War Is The Perfect Companion To Infinity War
Avengers 3 and 4 were originally announced as a two-part event titled Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2. However, Marvel later backtracked on the idea of Avengers 3 being only the first half of the story (presumably to make the cliffhanger ending more powerful), and declared that Avengers 4 would not be called Infinity War - Part 2. Now that the big secret of Infinity War's ending is out, it's easy to see why the two movies were put on the slate as a two-parter, and it would make sense for Avengers 4's title to complement or resemble Infinity War. Production designer Charles Wood told us that the two movies lean on each other, and an obvious way to reflect this would be to have one movie's title refer to all of space (infinity) and the other refer to all of time (eternity).

Avengers: Eternity War Is Close To Avengers: Forever
Although the title of Avengers 4 is being kept tightly under wraps, Feige and the Russos have offered up a couple of key clues as to what it could be. The most useful hint came in May, when the Russos said that no one had yet guessed the title correctly, but that the closest guess they'd seen was Avengers: Forever. "Forever" and "Eternity" are definitely close, and not only does the title fit with that clue, it also fits with the other major hint we've had about Avengers 4's title.
'Eternity War' Wasn't Said In Avengers: Infinity War
At one point the most popular guess for Avengers 4's title was Avengers: End Game, based on Doctor Strange pointedly uttering the line "we're in the end game now." However, Joe Russo threw water on this guess when, after being asked if the title of Avengers 4 is ever spoken aloud in Infinity War, replying with a firm "No." Eternity War is a pretty specific combination of words that is never said in Infinity War, which means it fits with the second major clue we have about Avengers 4's title.

Eternity War Could Bring Eternity To The MCU
Avengers: Infinity War didn't follow the plot of the Infinity Gauntlet comic arc exactly, but it did draw on plenty of elements from it. In Issue #5 of The Infinity Gauntlet, some of the most powerful cosmic entities in the universe unite in an effort to stop Thanos' rampage - including Galactus, Mephisto, Mistress Love and Sire Hate. When Thanos successfully defeats this alliance, he is confronted by Eternity itself: an entity as old as time itself because, well, Eternity is time itself. Eternity is an abstract entity that represents the passage of time, and has almost infinite power to manipulate the universe. In the comics, Thanos is made so powerful by the Infinity Gauntlet that he is able to defeat even Eternity, but Avengers 4 could introduce Eternity and have it be the key to the Avengers' efforts to undo "the snap" and stop Thanos once and for all. That would certainly be a strong way to expand the boundaries of the MCU and pave the way for The Eternals.

We expect an official reveal of Avengers 4's title soon, since Feige said over the summer that the reveal would probably come after the first Captain Marvel teaser - which was recently released. Until then, we're betting on Eternity War as the most likely subtitle.
