A new trailer for David Gordon Green’s Halloween features a brief look at Michael Myers unmasked, revealing a connection to a scene from John Carpenter’s classic film. Forty years after the original Halloween film by Carpenter, and nine after Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, Michael Myers is coming back to Haddonfield in a story that aims to rewrite what fans have come to know about the franchise.
This new Halloween will reunite Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and slasher Michael Myers (played by both Nick Castle and James Jude Courtney) in a story that completely ignores all sequels and remakes, making it a direct sequel to Carpenter’s original movie. Prior trailers have already hinted at some specific connections to the original, and referenced other details from the newly retconned sequels (such as the “brother and sister” twist, which will now be treated as a rumor spread after Michael's murderous rampage took place), and this latest trailer shows a connection to one of the most memorable moments from Laurie's original encounter with Michael.

Titled Heritage, the trailer (seen below, released by Universal Pictures UK) begins as a vintage documentary, briefly explaining Michael’s crimes: from murdering his sister when he was 6 years-old, to the 1978 murder spree where Laurie was the sole survivor. It then transitions into some quick shots of the asylum where Michael has been living, with a voiceover by Aaron Korey (Jefferson Hall) asking Laurie what she thinks possessed Michael that night. Around the 0:36 mark, there’s a quick look at Michael’s unmasked face, revealing a scar across his left eye.
In the 1978 film, Laurie hides in the closet and Michael breaks in. Laurie takes a metal hanger and stabs his left eye, making him drop his knife and giving her the chance to take it and stab him. Given that this new film is, essentially, Halloween II, a detail like this couldn’t be forgotten - and so now Michael Myers sports a damaged eye. This is just one of many details connecting to Carpenter’s film that fans will have to watch out for. Other details revealed in previous trailers include the scene with the asylum inmates in the middle of the road, reminiscent of one of the first scenes in the original film, and a minor twist to the ending: after being shot by Dr. Loomis and disappearing from the scene, Michael was eventually captured and sent to an asylum.
Director Green recently revealed that they had planned to reshoot the ending of the first film, and even rebuilt the house where it takes place. Ultimately, they decided not to go that route, but kept the house and used it in the film - a fun detail for the fans. Although Halloween's trailers have given a few hints at what Michael and Laurie will be up to after all these years, they've still managed to keep many details a secret. In just a matter of weeks, fans will see if there are any motives created for Michael's pursuit of Laurie, and just how their previous encounter has affected them physically, mentally, and emotionally.
