Bohemian Rhapsody rocks the box office with $122.5 million global haul

20th Century Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody broke free and rocked the competition, becoming box office champions with a global debut of$122.5 million. The film brought in $50 million domestically with another $72.5 million from over 50 international markets. Bohemian Rhapsody‘s $50 million opening gives it the second highest opening for a musical biopic, sitting behind 2015’s Straight Outta Compton with $60.2 million. Directed by Bryan Singer the film stars Rami Malek, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, and Joseph Mazzello. Also starring are Lucy Boynton, Aiden Gillen, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers.

Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms opened in second place with a domestic haul of $20 million, the lowest opening for Walt Disney Studios in 2018. The film posted an additional $38.5 million internationally for a global debut of $58.5 million. Directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, the fantasy adventure stars Mackenzie Foy, Morgan Freeman, Jayden Fowora-Knight, Helen Mirren, Winchester, and Kiera Knightley.

Tyler Perry’s Nobody’s Fool opened with $14 million domestically, the 17th lowest opening for the director, ahead of only 2007’s Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls ($11.2 million) and 2014’s Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club ($8 million). Nobody’s Fool stars Tiffany Haddish, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwick, Mehcad Brooks, Amber Riley, and Whoopi Goldberg. The film is directed and written by Tyler Perry and marks his first film to be released under his new exclusive deal with Viacom.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Star is Born fell for the first time since it debuted, falling from second to fourth place with $11.1 million but falling only 20% weekend to weekend. The film now sits at $165.6 million domestically with its $128 million from international markets the film has a worldwide total of $293.9 million. A Star is Born stars four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper and multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Lady Gaga (as Stefani Germanotta), in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper helms the drama, marking his directorial debut.

Universal and Blumhouse’s Halloween feel from first to fifth place, bringing in $11 million in its third weekend of release. The 11th entry in the franchise has brought in $150.4 million domestically with another $79.2 million internationally for a global total of $229.6 million. This marks the first time that an entry in the series has crossed the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office, and puts the new film behind only the original when factoring in inflation adjustments. Directed by David Gordon Green, the film stars Jamie Lee Curtis once again as Laurie Strode. The cast for the film also includes Judy Greer who plays Karen Strode, the daughter of Curtis’ character, and Andi Matichak who plays Allyson, the granddaughter of Laurie Strode.

Columbia Pictures’ Venom fell to sixth place, adding another $7.85 millionto its domestic total. The Spider-Man less spin-off now sits at $198.66 million domestically with another $342.9 from international markets. Globally the film sits at $541 million, and is Sony’s top grossing 2018 release worldwide. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film stars Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, and Michelle Williams. Venom is produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal.
