Super Smash Bros Ultimate Won't Include Custom Special Moves

One of the biggest selling points of Smash 4, custom special moves, won't be included in the latest installment in the series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In the Wii U and 3DS games, players could swap a character's special moves with alternate moves. For example, Yoshi's Egg Roll could be exchanged with a heavier and slower version of the attack, or with a lighter and faster version.

Every character in Super Smash Bros. history is returning for the new game, which will release on the Nintendo Switch in just a few weeks. With a roster that features 63 veterans, five echo fighters and six brand-new challengers, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is packed full of characters. Six more will join the game as DLC in 2019. One of the six, Piranha Plant, will be added in a free update for those who bought the game early. Ultimate will also feature an unprecedented 103 stages, which nearly doubles the number of stages in the last game.

GameSpot reports that a Nintendo representative has confirmed that one feature missing from Ultimate is custom special moves. In the last game, players had three different options for all four special moves. Custom moves were available for every character in the base game, but not the seven DLC fighters. However, in Ultimate, moves can still be customized for the Mii Gunner, Mii Brawler, and Mii Swordfighter, since customization is an important aspect of these characters.

Though it may seem surprising that Ultimate would leave out a key element from Smash 4, it should be noted that adding custom moves for every character in the roster would have been a massive undertaking for the development team, considering the game includes a whopping 74 fighters. They could have brought back the custom moves from Smash 4's 51 characters, but moves would still have to be developed for 23 more challengers. With Ultimate focusing on bringing back every character, almost all stages from previous installments, a new story, and all sorts of new modes, it's easy to understand why the developers didn't make custom special moves a priority for Ultimate.

The absence of custom moves is also justified by a new feature called Spirits, which factor heavily into the game's story, World of Light. Characters who didn't get to make it into the final roster are represented in Ultimate with Spirits, which can be added to the game's playable fighters to give them a wide variety of boosts and attributes.
