Wayne Trailer: YouTube Premium’s Comedic Antihero From Deadpool Writers

The first trailer for YouTube Premium’s Wayne looks like a dark comedy gem. The series is written and created by Shawn Simmons (Awkward), with Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick on board to write and produce as well, and the result of that collaboration is a wry comedy that’s very much in the vein of Netflix’s acclaimed coming-of-age series The End of the F***ing World, as it too centers on a disaffected teenager who embarks on an unlikely journey with a spitfire companion. This time, however, instead of a burgeoning psychopath testing the limits of his psychopathy, Wayne (Mark McKenna), is a young vigilante in the making.

The series’ first trailer does a great job of not only generating interest, but raising expectations for what viewers can expect from YouTube Premium’s growing library of original content. Following the release of Cobra Kai earlier this year, the streaming service put itself in contention with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon as a destination for quality shows. More recently, YouTube delivered the sharp-looking sci-fi thriller Origin, showing that it can deliver a variety of different content to viewers looking for the next big thing.

That moniker may well be in Wayne’s future, since the series looks to be a fun little slice of anarchy. The story follow Boston teen Wayne, who teams up with his friend Del (Ciara Bravo) to journey down to Florida in search of his late father’s stolen car. Along the way, Wayne and Del come across a variety of interesting-looking characters — like Del’s father, played by Dean Winters (Brooklyn Nine-Nine and some other hapless individuals who run afoul of Wayne’s fists and Del’s mordant sense of humor. Check out the trailer and synopsis below:

“From the writers of “Deadpool” and “Zombieland” comes the gritty and sometimes bloody tale of WAYNE. Sixteen year-old Wayne sets out on a dirt bike with his new crush Del to take back the 1978 Pontiac Trans Am that was stolen from his father before he died. It is Wayne and Del against the world. WAYNE will star Mark McKenna (“Sing Street,” “Kat and Alfie: Redwater”) as “Wayne” and Ciara Bravo (“Big Time Rush,” “Red Band Society”) as “Del.” Joshua J. Williams (“Mudbound”) will also recur as “Orlando.””

In all, the series looks like it’ll be a fun ride and maybe even a reason to throw down some more of that discretionary income for a subscription to YouTube Premium.
