Veronica Mars Season 5 Is On Hold (For Now) | Screen Rant

Fans should not expect Veronica Mars season 5 any time soon, with there being no definite plans to order more episodes at the moment. With a behind-the-scenes tale as storied as that of its titular heroine, Veronica Mars first debuted in 2004. Created by Rob Thomas, the neo-noir series told the story of the titular Veronica Mars, a high school student who often moonlighted as a private detective. Exploring a myriad of real-world issues such as rape and class warfare, the show lasted for three seasons before being canceled in 2007. Regardless, the show maintained an extremely passionate fan base. In 2013, Thomas mobilized them via a crowdfunding campaign to resurrect Veronica Mars as a movie.

The Veronica Mars movie served to wrap up lingering plot threads and give fans a more satisfactory sense of closure. Then, it was announced that Hulu would not only stream previous seasons but had also greenlit further Veronica Mars adventures. Comprised of eight episodes, Veronica Mars season 4 was released in July. No longer just moonlighting, Veronica had firmly settled into working within her father's private investigation firm. She had also solidified her relationship with longtime love interest, Logan Echolls. Unfortunately, an investigation into a serial bomber came to a head in an extremely surprising finale - with Logan ultimately killed shortly after he and Veronica got married. Though Veronica Mars season 4 earned largely positive reviews, the final twist proved highly divisive. As a result, even Thomas' explanation for the death proved unsatisfactory to many fans.

According to TVLine, Thomas has revealed that there have been no discussions regarding further episodes yet. The outlet also reported that while Hulu declined to offer a comment on the story, a source at the streaming company revealed there to be no current plans to order another season. As such, any hope for Veronica Mars season 5 and a chance to earn some manner of redemption within the eyes of fans will very much remain up in the air for the foreseeable future.

However, star Kristen Bell would be open to Veronica Mars season 5, if fans wanted it. Bell previously even went a step further, envisioning herself returning to Veronica Mars until it became more akin to Murder, She Wrote or featured a bizarre twist that ultimately saw her be the killer rather than the crime solver. Should further episodes ever emerge, Thomas also revealed that he already had some ideas in mind. One of which he described as "very Agatha Christie-esque". Elaborating further, Thomas stated: "It won't be this exactly, but some version of Murder in a Manor House. I want to really lean into that we are a detective show... I feel like season 4 was the bridge season, to take us from half soap opera/half mystery show to full detective mystery show."

Fans will, of course, have their own views on whether Veronica Mars should continue. There is certainly a lot of scope for stories remaining. There is also a number of new lingering threads that Veronica Mars could explore - including the whereabouts of Tina Majorino's fan-favorite character, Mac. Given the fanbase's love for the aforementioned soap opera/mystery aspects of Veronica Mars, however, it remains to be seen whether they would embrace the idea of change as much as Thomas has as the primary writer. Given that, and the fact that Veronica Mars season 5 would be sans Dohring as Logan now, maybe an extended hiatus is the best bet - until such a time as a passionate eagerness for new adventures comes back around.

Veronica Mars seasons 1-4 are available to stream in their entirety on Hulu.
