MBTI® Of Stand By Me Characters | ScreenRant

What fun is it knowing your Myers–Briggs Type Indicator score if you don't have the scores of favorite characters, like the ones in the best film of all time, Stand by Me, to compare it with? Hyperbole aside, it's still loads of fun to think about how our favorite characters might score if they took the MBTI® test and whether or not we might share similar personality traits.

The boys who made their stand by the train tracks and Ray Brower's body might be fairly different in their values and beliefs, but Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern all have big personalities that are fun to analyze.

10 Chris: INFJ

Chris Chambers is clearly an INFJ, otherwise known as an Advocate. He loses his own life attempting to be a peacemaker and do what's right, and his sense of justice is what gets him out of the gutter, helping him to focus on his goals. Chris's conscience wouldn't let him keep the stolen milk money, and like many INFJs, once someone defies his sense of right and wrong, Chris would not associate with that person anymore.

Incredibly insightful, Chris gives Gordie good advice about his parents and his writing talent. He's the most inspiring person in the work, and readers of The Body know that he's the one who scares off Ace's gang with the gun.

9 Gordie: INFP

An INFP, or the Mediator, Gordie Lachance is an open-minded youth who doesn't like conflict, especially between his friends. He's passionate about his writing even though his family isn't nearly as interested in it as they were with his older brother Denny's sports career. Gordie is also too shy to toot his own horn, which is where his BFF Chris comes in.

Gordie's work ethic helps both him and Chris succeed in high school. Gordie is extremely dedicated to his friend and wants Chris to rise above what everyone else thinks he's capable of in life. Like many INFPs, Gordie is a dreamer, which comes in handy while he's writing.

8 Teddy: ESTP

The boldest and loudest of the boys, Teddy Duchamp is an ESTP or the Entrepreneur. Direct and insensitive, Teddy never minces words and always bluntly says what he's thinking, which is sometimes the most original yet weird insult the rest of the boys have ever seen. Watch them play cards near the beginning of Stand by Me for proof.

Teddy is always direct, which makes being around him both uncomfortable and refreshing since he's not going to lie. Unfortunately, Teddy tends to get himself into danger since he lives in the moment and doesn't think about consequences.

7 Vern: ESFJ

Sweet yet cowardly Vern Tessio remembers to bring the comb but nothing else. Like many other ESFJs or Consuls, Vern desperately wants to be loved by his social group. He's incredibly loyal to his buddies and has a very strong sense of duty when it comes to being there for them, but he's also always worried about what they're thinking of him. Vern is the neediest of the four, especially when it comes to the other three's approval.

Vern's strength is his openness and warmth, and it's easier for him to connect with the gang than, say, introverted Gordie. While Vern is not a quintessential ESFJ, as he is quite shy and not particularly popular, the character shares many other traits with this personality type.

6 Ace: ISTP

Audiences recently saw Ace Merrill brought back to life in season two of Castle Rock, and before his resurrection, he was as cruel as ever. Ace is an ISTP, often referred to as a Virtuoso, and he makes a great leader for his gang because he's so good at prioritizing, delegating, and responding to a crisis as it occurs. It takes a lot for Ace to lose his cool and when he does, you have to watch your back.

Much of the chaos that Ace causes is simply because of his boredom. Like other ISTPs, he has to be occupied all the time, even though he's laid back. He's also inventive yet practical, which explains a lot of the shenanigans his gang does.

5 Charlie: ESFJ

Although Billy Tessio is Vern's older brother, it's Billy's friend, Charlie Hogan, who matches Vern in personality. As an ESFJ or Consul, Charlie deeply cares not only about his friends but what they all think of him, and he will do anything to avoid making Ace mad, in particular. Like Vern, Charlie can't stand criticism and will do whatever he can to avoid confrontation.

Charlie does feel a sense of duty to report Ray Brower's body, but Billy admonishes him for not thinking it through. In another gang, Charlie likely could have become a much more sensitive and kind person; as it stands. he's one of the nicer members of Ace's gang.

4 Milo Pressman: ENTP

The meanest adult we encounter in the Stand by Me film is Milo Pressman, the junkyard owner famous for his attack dog, Chopper. Milo's likely friendlier around adults than kids who trespass on his property, which is why he's an ENTP, the personality type known as the Debater. If Milo had a Facebook account, he'd comment on every social issue with the preface, "Just to be devil's advocate here..."

He really enjoys upsetting people and arguing with them, and he can think quickly to exploit people's weaknesses as soon as he sees them. Pressman is obviously intolerant of youth entering his junkyard and he probably doesn't have a sensitive bone in his body. He likes to socialize but mostly to try to make other people feel bad.

3 Denny: ENFJ

Sociable and kind, Denny Lachance is a Protagonist or an ENFJ whose life was cut much too short. Beloved by everyone, Denny always wanted his parents to really see Gordie for who he was and appreciate his brother. He used his charismatic charm and humor to connect with people and even inspire them with his athleticism.

As a natural leader, Denny could help his younger brother navigate through their father's stormy moods and disapproval, giving him the support he needed that his parents just didn't give. When the family lost him, they lost the reliable, selfless anchor that held them together.

2 Mr. Lachance: ENTJ

While Gordie's father seems like an introvert, both of the Lachances are simply stuck in their grief and were likely much more extroverted before losing Denny. An ENTJ or Commander, Mr. Lachance is a very confident man who thinks he knows everything, even if he doesn't always know the whole story. His iron will and sharp mind make him good at leading a household, but his intolerance is clear when he ridicules Gordie's friends, asking why he can't have friends like his brother's.

Like many Commanders, Mr. Lachance can be quite full of himself and expects people to follow his way or the highway. Gordie is unlike his father in the best way, even when he becomes a parent himself.

1 Eyeball: ESTP

Take Ace Merrill and make him less direct and more charming and you've got Eyeball Chambers, big brother to Chris. Like Teddy, Eyeball is an ESTP, an Entrepreneur, but he's an even more destructive example of one. Stealing doesn't bother him one bit, and like many famous Entrepreneurs, Eyeball can deliver a gut-wrenching insult with a saccharine-sweet tone.

Eyeball is the most sociable of his gang, and quite popular, second only to Ace. Like Ace, Eyeball is very perceptive and can pinpoint one of his victim's weaknesses a mile away. He has little regard for taking the safe route, but he is slightly more cautious than his best friend.
