Willem Dafoe is quite the veteran actor. He's dabbled in just about every genre there is, and he's blown us away time and time again. We never tire of this versatile and brilliant man, and he's definitely not done in Hollywood. With 133 acting credits to his name and four Academy Award nominations, this man has definitely stolen our hearts as well as every critic's out there.
He's been acting since the '80s, but this man has 8 upcoming movies in production, and 4 that have premiered this year, so we thought we'd throw it back to this man's best roles. So, in case you're looking for a Willem Dafoe binge, here are his 10 most iconic roles, ranked from newest to most classic.
10 The Lighthouse (2019)
This movie is quite honestly acting at its best. Willem Dafoe teams up with Robert Pattinson, and they play lighthouse keepers (veteran and young), who get trapped on an island in the midst of a terrible storm. They try to maintain their sanity with only each other as support, and this movie is definitely a hallucinatory and wild ride.
It's humorous, horrific, and totally bewildering. These two blew it out of the water, and we promise you'll never look at anything the same ever again. Really, we can't explain this flick with words but expect an incredibly confusing and incredible ride.
9 At Eternity's Gate (2018)
Willem Dafoe plays Vincent van Gogh in this biography drama. This movie tells his story during his time in Aries and Auvers-sur-Oise, France. With religion, mental illness, and friendship, this is an iconic and beautiful tale of one of the most famous painters in history.
This is a battle between eternity and pain, and Dafoe is honestly brilliant in this film. If you like biographies and the masterful talent of this actor, we definitely suggest this film.
8 The Florida Project (2017)
This Oscar-nominated film is a beautiful and tragic tale of childhood, addiction, and poverty. This film stars a six-year-old and her group of friends at a hotel in Florida, where each of them struggle to have a safe and adventurous childhood in the face of adversity. Willem Dafoe is the hotel manager, and his role is absolutely mesmerizing.
This movie is devastating, but it's one of the most beautiful and honest stories of the decade. Words don't do it justice, and we think everyone needs to see this movie.
7 The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
This crime comedy is clearly a classic. This movie is directed by Wes Anderson and follows the story of a concierge and the lobby boy at a famous hotel in a fictional Republic, set between the two World Wars. Willem Dafoe is Jopling, and his role will definitely sweep you off your feet.
If you haven't seen this flick, we more than suggest it for a wild and incredible ride. This movie is unlike anything else out there: it's different, dynamic, and totally worth watching. Plus, we can't pass up Wes Anderson AND Willem Dafoe, right?
6 The Aviator (2004)
This biography drama is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, and Willem Dafoe. It follows the early years of director and aviator, Howard Hughes, from the 1920s to the 1940s. Willem Dafoe is Roland Sweet, and we couldn't help but include this classic flick on the list.
If you love a classic Scorsese film AND this brilliant actor, there probably isn't a better movie for you. Of course, this movie is iconic on its own.
5 Spider-Man (2002)
We know this definitely isn't Willem's best role ever, but we know that it's certainly iconic (and that Spider-Man fans might start a riot if it wasn't included). Honestly, though, Willem Dafoe did make this role absolutely iconic, and most people know this man as the Green Goblin.
This is, of course, the original Spider-Man trilogy, and Willem was the absolutely perfect and terrifying villain. We know he gave you nightmares, and this is definitely an amazing role that would be a crime to ignore.
4 The Boondock Saints (1999)
This movie is totally underrated, and we think you should go watch it right now. This action crime thriller stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus, who play Irish Catholic brothers who become vigilantes, killing Boston's criminal underworld one criminal at a time (and of course, sometimes many at once).
Willem Dafoe is Paul Smecker, the eccentric, unhinged, music-loving detective on the case. Of course, he feels conflicted stopping the "greater good". Also, there's a brilliant drag scene at the end, and this is hands down one of Willem's most incredible roles.
3 The English Patient (1996)
This war drama takes place in WWII and follows the story of a nurse and the victim of a plane crash. This man's past comes in flashbacks, but Dafoe's character is confident that he saw the man working with the Germans. This movie is a war classic, and definitely became an iconic role for Willem Dafoe.
This movie is definitely one you don't want to miss, and we can't help but love Dafoe the entire way through. We love a good war drama, especially with this brilliant actor.
2 Mississippi Burning (1988)
This crime drama follows two FBI agents, with very different styles, who are investigating the disappearance of civil rights activists in the '60s in Mississippi. In a time of segregation, the younger agent is fighting against the ways of the small town. Starring Gene Hackman, Frances McDormand, and Willem Dafoe, this is definitely a crime classic.
This Oscar-winning flick is riveting, and Dafoe's character, Ward, is definitely one of his most iconic roles to date.
1 Platoon (1986)
It's not a secret that this is one of the best flicks and best roles, that Willem Dafoe has ever taken on. Taking place in the Vietnam war, this Oliver Stone directed film follows a young soldier who struggles with morality in the horrors of the war.
Starring alongside Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Johnny Depp, and many more, Willem's portrayal of Sergeant Elias is mesmerizing, and this is probably one of the best war flicks of all time. Of course, this also makes it one of Willem Dafoe's most iconic roles of his career.
