A new teaser for season 2 of Netflix's Altered Carbon shows a first look at Anthony Mackie as Takeshi Kovacs. Altered Carbon, based on the Richard K. Morgan novel of the same name, takes place in a futuristic world where humans have conquered death by digitally uploading their consciousness into disks called cortical stacks. These stacks basically grant immortality to anyone who has them, as their consciousness can be downloaded into a physical body, called a sleeve.
The series revolves around a man named Takeshi Kovacs, the last surviving member of the Envoys, a rebel group of soldiers, who were ultimately crushed when attempting to take down the new world order. The first season of Altered Carbon begins 250 years after their defeat. At this time, Kovacs' stack is uploaded into a new body, Ryker (Joel Kinnaman), to solve a murder for one of the wealthiest men in the universe. After Netflix renewed Altered Carbon for season 2, the streaming subscription service announced that Anthony Mackie would step into the lead role of Kovacs.
Now, Netflix has officially released a new video of Mackie in season 2 of Altered Carbon. It seems that Kovacs is getting a few new upgrades, including the ability to have guns jump into his hands, as if by some kind of magnetic force. The teaser begins with flashbacks of Kovacs' previous lives, and then finally shows him staring into a mirror, eventually revealing Mackie's face. Check out the new teaser for Altered Carbon season 2 below:
The season 1 finale of Altered Carbon saw Ryker's consciousness returned to his original sleeve so that he could reunite with his lover. Kovacs' sleeve, though, gets transferred, presumably to Mackie. Season 2 will take place 30 years after the season 1 finale with Kovacs searching for his long lost love, Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). Other cast members confirmed for season 2 include Simone Missick, Dina Shihabi, Torben Liebrecht, James Saito, and Chris Conner. Although Kinnaman is not currently confirmed for season 2, there is still an opportunity for him to reprise his role as Ryker: when asked about a possible return, Kinnaman did not rule it out. In addition to the new teaser, Netflix also shared some photos of Altered Carbon season 2, including a few more with Mackie:
Part of the appeal of Altered Carbon for sci-fi fans is the show's ability to continuously reinvent itself: the concept of sleeves and uploading digital consciousness into them means that any actor could potentially portray any character on the show. This gives the series a unique concept that could offer it many future seasons, much in the way that regeneration has continued to revitalize Doctor Who. Altered Carbon season 2 arrives on Netflix February 27.
