The latest episode of Doctor Who, "Ascension of the Cybermen," introduced a mystery character named Brendan, and he could be destined to become the Lone Cyberman. Doctor Who season 12 is coming to a close with an explosive two-parter that has to answer a lot of questions. Who is the Timeless Child, why did the Master destroy Gallifrey, and what does an Irish policeman named Brendan have to do with everything?
Brendan's story was the most unexpected element in "Ascension of the Cybermen." The episode took viewers to what appeared to Ireland, and a family finding a young baby left in a crib on the road. They adopted him and brought him up as their own. In the end, he became a police officer, dedicating his life to making a difference. Then, in a shocking twist, Brendan's attempt to arrest a thief went wrong. He was shot in the chest, knocked off a cliffside, and left for dead. Incredibly, he wasn't even injured, even though there was a bullet-hole in his clothes showing he should have died. The final Brendan scenes were even stranger, set on the day he was retiring, and they revealed he was being subjected to a mysterious form of torture by his nearest and dearest. It was all pretty bewildering, leaving viewers wondering whether Brendan could be one of the Timeless Children or even the Lone Cyberman.
At first glance, this possibility seems unlikely. After all, the Brendan scenes all appear to be set in Ireland, some time in the mid 20th century. But that could just be a misdirect; after all, no Irish places are mentioned by name. This could quite easily be a human colony in the far future, one that has suffered both societal and technological devolution. When the Cybermen come, they do what they always do: convert humans into cybernetic beings. In the case of Brendan, however, something could have gone wrong.
The Lone Cyberman has given a somewhat garbled account of how he was created. At first glance, it looks as though he was partway through the conversion process when the Cybermen were destroyed and the Cyberiad - the Cyberman hive mind governing all Cyber technology - was shut down. But the Lone Cyberman himself has suggested a far more personal reason, claiming he was rejected for conversion. Brendan's mysterious healing powers could be the reason the Cybermen rejected him; perhaps they were unable to complete the conversion process. The experience could have fractured Brendan's mind, driving him insane. He assumed a new identity, "Ashad," which translates as "Lion."
It's true that, right now, the evidence for this theory is sparse. However, Chris Chibnall's season 12 scripts have involved a number of last-second plot twists, frequently quite poorly signposted.
At this stage, all that can be said for certain is that Brendan is somehow going to be important to the Doctor Who season 12 finale. He's most likely to either be a Timeless Child or the Lone Cyberman himself. Only time will tell which Doctor Who theory is true.
