The Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey Stunt So Intense It Destroyed The Cameraman

Birds of Prey chronicles the story of how Harley Quinn brought Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya together to form the female trio, Birds of Prey. The women (excluding Huntress) are on the quest for one particular diamond. The diamond happened to be smuggled by child pickpocket Cassandra Cain. When their pursuit leads them to an abandoned funhouse, the women must team up to save themselves from the villain who is after them, Black Mask. While the funhouse scene is the heaviest in stunts and combat, the entire film is stacked with fierce females kicking butt.

Yan tweeted about one particular moment of the funhouse fight sequence in response to one fan's appreciation tweet. Photographer Lauren Nakao Winn tweeted about the sequence when Huntress stabs one of the goons as she's sliding down the slide. It's a great use of the setting, but it took a lot of coordination to orchestrate the moment. Nakao Winn explained that Winstead had to hold herself up while the cameraman went down the slide ahead of her, and turned around so he could film the action. Yan retweeted Nakao Winn's retelling of the story and added that the cameraman was Birds of Prey's DP Matty Libatique. She also noted the shot resulted in Winstead (and the 200 lb stuntman) colliding into him as the screen went black.

Cathy Yan added, in a second tweet, that Libatique had volunteered to film the shot himself, and was able to walk off the collision immediately. Yan also retweeted several of Nakao Winn's tweets that broke down more of these tricky shots, and other elements of the film. Yan replied to Nakao Winn's tweet, announcing her Birds of Prey appreciation thread, explaining how nice it feels to have her work and attention to detail acknowledged. Nakao Winn wrote 115 tweets in the thread and has written 242 tweets in total about the film.

Birds of Prey is one of those films that shows how much work is truly required to pull off a big-budget action movie. Each actor, the director, the stuntmen, and even the cameramen have put in literal blood, sweat, and tears to make this movie happen, and it shows. The cast and crew cared about the film enough to give all of themselves to the process to bring these comic book characters to life. Seeing the movie in theaters is the least audiences can do in return.
