Stefan Salvatore found love with Caroline Forbes in the later seasons of The Vampire Diaries. Although the show initially centered around his relationship with Elena Gilbert, it gradually moves away from the love triangle premise after Elena falls in love with Damon. Stefan falls for his best friend, and marries Caroline in Season 8's "I'll Wed You In The Golden Summertime."
Stefan and Caroline's romance — also known as Steroline — was a popular pairing with fans of The Vampire Diaries. However, several other characters stole the younger Salvatore's heart. Looking back, maybe Stefan's endgame romance should have been different...
10 Valerie Tulle
Valerie Tulle is introduced in the seventh season of The Vampire Diaries. The witch-vampire hybrid is a Heretic and one of Lily Salvatore's adopted children. Valerie is revealed to be Stefan's first love as the two characters were romantically involved when they were still human.
Stefan reunites with Valerie after seeing Caroline with Alaric, Josie, and Lizzie. He believes that Caroline is happier with her new family and leaves her behind to travel the world with his first love.
9 Katherine Pierce
Stefan also fell in love with Katherine Pierce when he was a human. The vampire, formerly known as Katerina Petrova, compelled and manipulated Stefan and his brother Damon before turning them both into vampires.
Katherine claimed to genuinely love Stefan despite her selfish and cunning ways. She tells Damon that Stefan was always her favorite Salvatore, and Stefan is the only character to give her a peaceful goodbye on her deathbed in Season 5's "500 Years Of Solitude."
8 Lexi Branson
Lexi was Stefan's best friend, and helped mentor him as a vampire while he was struggling with his bloodlust. The two vampires were friends and drinking buddies until Damon staked Lexi to death in Season 1's "162 Candles."
Despite dying in the first season, Lexi reappears several times throughout the series in flashbacks and when the veil shielding the Other Side disintegrates. She is reunited with Stefan in the series finale "I Was Feeling Epic" after they find peace in the afterlife.
7 Rebekah Mikaelson
Rebekah Mikaelson and the other Original siblings Finn and Kol were introduced in the third season of The Vampire Diaries. It is revealed that Stefan was friends with Klaus and Rebekah's lover during his days as a Ripper in the 1920s. Klaus compels him to forget his relationship with Rebekah after Mikael nearly catches up with them.
Stefan and Rebekah shared a steamy and passionate affair. She cared deeply for him, and their reunion in Season 4 was a refreshing pairing.
6 Bonnie Bennett
Bonnie and Stefan may not be best friends, but they have a steady relationship based on mutual respect. In the show's earlier seasons, Stefan helps Bonnie embrace her powers, which she uses repeatedly to help Stefan and Elena.
Bonnie is a powerful witch with a strong set of morals and undeniable bravery. She has sacrificed her life more than once for her friends, something she shares in common with Stefan.
5 Klaus Mikaelson
Klaus is initially an antagonist when he comes to Mystic Falls in Season 2. Fans discover in Season 3 that he used to be best friends with Stefan Salvatore during his Ripper days in the 1920s. Klaus and Stefan were genuine friends, and the Original hybrid was dismayed when he had to compel Stefan to forget him after Mikael's attack.
Klaus forces Stefan to accompany him on a bloody road trip in Season 3. The Original is undeniably despicable, but cared for Stefan in his conflicting way.
4 Jenna Sommers
Jenna was a minor character in the first two seasons of The Vampire Diaries. She is Elena and Jeremy's aunt, and becomes their legal guardian following the deaths of their parents. Jenna looks after the Gilberts until Klaus turns her into a vampire and kills her during the ritual sacrifice in Season 2.
Stefan was always respectful and caring towards Jenna, and she approved of Stefan a lot more than she did of Damon. A relationship between Stefan and Jenna would have been interesting if unlikely.
3 Alaric Saltzman
Alaric is Damon's best friend and drinking buddy, but the older Salvatore hasn't spared Ric from his violent and selfish tendencies. In hindsight, Alaric should have befriended Stefan instead. The two characters share a great deal in common and work well together throughout the series.
Stefan and Alaric clash in over Caroline in Season 7. Both characters fall in love with her, but perhaps they would have been more suited to each other instead. Caroline is a former student of Alaric's, and their relationship was one of the show's more unpopular pairings.
2 Vicki Donovan
Vicki Donovan, like Lexi, died early in Season 1 though reappeared occasionally throughout The Vampire Diaries. She is turned into a vampire by Damon, and Stefan attempts to take her under his wing and teach her how to control her bloodlust. Unfortunately, Vicki cannot fight her new nature, and attacks Elena, forcing Stefan to stake her.
It would have been interesting to see Vicki as Stefan's vampire protege and later love interest instead of Caroline. Vicki was wilder and more rebellious, and would have encouraged Stefan to let loose a little.
1 Elena Gilbert
Stefan's arguably most popular and original pairing in the show is his epic romance with Elena Gilbert. Stefan and Elena fall in love with each other early in the series. The Stelena ship sailed until Season 4 when she dumped him for Damon after becoming a vampire.
Elena was an epic love of Stefan's, and many fans agree that he never fully got over her. If Elena had never left him for Damon, then Stefan would never have fallen in love with Caroline or married the blonde vampire.
