The script for Avengers: Endgame was recently released to the public, and a quick read-through shows that Smart Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) was originally even more of a big-time science celebrity than in the finished movie. As more and more information comes to light regarding what the film looked like in pre-production, fans can see how close to their original vision Marvel Studios ended up pulling off the grand finale to the Infinity Saga.
As seen in one of Avengers: Endgame's funniest scenes, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is stunned to discover that five years into the future, Bruce Banner has combined his two warring psyches to become Smart Hulk. Banner explains that after "eighteen months in the gamma lab, [he] put the brains and the brawn together." Bruce Banner's new form of Smart Hulk became a huge celebrity in the worlds of both science and popular culture.
Most fans know that there is an incomplete deleted scene where Smart Hulk is seen saving people from a burning building, which was included with the theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame. This would've been the biggest indication of Smart Hulk's status as a famous science superhero, as not only does he save a bunch of people - in a snazzy new superhero outfit with a giant "H" on the chest - but he also tells the fire chief on the ground that the fire is burning at 900 kelvin along with advice on how to combat the fire.
In addition to being the world's only superhero in the original plan for Avengers: Endgame, in the script Smart Hulk name-drops his famous friends. First, when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), and Scott persuade Bruce to attempt time travel, the initial ending of the scene had Smart Hulk telling them, "I’m supposed to be on Oprah next week, but I guess I could move things around."
Later, when Smart Hulk and the rest of the Avengers first attempt time travel, the script has Smart Hulk attempting to reassure his teammates about his scientific pedigree. He tells a panicky Scott, "I’m personal friends with Bill Nye the Science Guy."
The Avengers: Endgame script has Smart Hulk showing off his celebrity status once more when he and Rocket arrive in New Asgard to speak to Thor. When they first arrive, they catch a lot of wary looks from the local Asgardians-turned-fishermen. When Rocket inquires what they're looking at, Smart Hulk responds, "I'm kind of famous." In the final movie, this interaction skips Smart Hulk's comment and gets straight to Rocket questioning the aesthetic of New Asgard.
Last, Avengers: Endgame's script even includes a scene where Smart Hulk is eating his very own brand of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. As mentioned in Avengers: Infinity War as Wong's favorite flavor, "Hunka Hulka Burning Fudge" has been produced by Ben & Jerry's at some point since Banner left Earth in 2015.
Having Smart Hulk indulging in his own brand of ice cream further hammers home the point in the script that five years in the future, he is a huge science celebrity superhero, and it might even have gone to his head. This easter egg actually made it into Avengers: Endgame; if you pay close attention during the scene where Rocket is explaining where Peter Quill found the Power Stone on Morag, Smart Hulk is in fact eating his own brand of Ben & Jerry's.
