After the major setback that was 2017’s The Mummy, Universal Pictures’ Monsterverse has bounced back in a big way with Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man, which exceeded expectations with a $29 million opening weekend to take the #1 spot at the domestic box office. Overseas it took in another $20.2 million to bring its grand total to $49.2 million worldwide. With an estimated budget of only $7 million and a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, this looks to be a home run for the studio and will likely become the model from which they reboot their monster IP in the future.

After two weeks at #1 Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog slipped one spot to #2 with $16 million for a $128.2 million domestic take and a worldwide cume of $265.4 million. By next week the film will likely have surpassed Pokemon Detective Pikachu to become the highest grossing domestic video game movie of all-time.

20th Century Studios’ Call of the Wild slipped from second to third with $13.2 million for a $45.8 million domestic haul and $79.2 million worldwide, a somewhat anemic performance for a film budgeted at $125 million.

FUNimation earned a surprise placement in the Top 5 as the anime feature My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising took the #4 slot with $5 million for a domestic total of $8.4 million and a worldwide take of $23.5 million.

Sony’s persistent blockbuster Bad Boys For Life dropped one spot to #5 to take in $4.3 million for a $197.3 million domestic take and $405.3 million worldwide.
