There are so many different incredible high school movies to choose from, so here is a list of ten to help you decide what to watch tonight. Whether nostalgia has set in, or a movie is a vibe for the night, check out one of these movies - or all of these movies! They won't disappoint.
10 The Breakfast Club (1985)
This John Hughes classic is a staple in the high school movie genre. When five teenagers are put in Saturday detention, they find themselves with more similarities than they ever thought possible. This film shows how teenagers from all different backgrounds can come together despite their drastically different lives outside the confines of their high school. The Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)" was on Billboard's Top Rock Chart for sixteen weeks, and peaked at #1 for three weeks. This movie holds up and has since its release 35 years ago.
9 The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
This movie is about a self-conscious boy named Charlie who starts to find his self-confidence when two older step-siblings, Sam and Patrick, befriend him and take him under their wing. The film manages to highlight friendship and relationships while also tackling darker issues without making light of them. The movie is based on the book by the same title written by Stephen Chbosky. It stars Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, and Logan Lerman. It also has a kickin' soundtrack, some really valuable lessons, and Paul Rudd.
8 Dazed And Confused (1993)
This movie takes place over the last night of the school year in 1976. The rising senior class goes out on the town while rising freshmen try to avoid getting hazed. It has a killer soundtrack and a cast with some familiar faces - Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Anthony Rapp, and Parker Posey.
The characters deal with problems that seem menial watching as an adult but are of vital importance when you are at that age. It's the type of movie that will make you wish you were living it and might make you try out some retro fashion styles while you are at it.
7 Lady Bird (2017)
In Sacramento, 2002, a strong-willed girl who goes by the name "Lady Bird" makes her way through her senior year. This film revolves around Lady Bird's relationship with her best friend, her mother, her father, and herself. Greta Gerwig is superb, and her directing is part of the reason why. This movie does not feel cheesy or forced, the relationships are natural and real, while the acting is raw and clever.
6 Dead Poets Society (1989)
Set at an all-male boarding school, this movie is as beautiful as it is tragic. Robin Williams plays the intellectual and supportive English teacher, Mr. Keating. He instills a love of the written word, specifically poetry, within his students. The boys meet in secret at night and read poetry that was written centuries ago. As they hear the words of men who lived and wrote before they were even mere ideas, they discover things about themselves, and it's all thanks to Mr. Keating who helped them find their true desires and dreams.
5 Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
This film is another directed by John Hughes, packed with great quotes and memorable scenes. This movie showcases that time period where nothing matters but everything matters. The impending future is right around the corner, but it seems too big to tackle. So Ferris fakes sick with his best friend and girlfriend. They spend an unforgettable weekday in the city of Chicago. There's an evil school principal, a musical number, and even a scene starring Charlie Sheen.
4 Superbad (2007)
A trio of lovable nerd best friends played by Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, go to a house party and end up on some adventures on the way there. This movie seems to tackle a more modern high school experience showcasing the nitty-gritty realities - awkward sexual encounters, getting sick from alcohol, the struggle of prioritizing friendships, relationships, and personal successes - all while being laugh-out-loud funny.
Although it feels real, it also has some hilarious plot points that are completely impracticable, but nonetheless, absolutely hilarious.
3 Booksmart (2019)
Often referred to as "the Superbad for girls," this movie is so much more than that. This movie seems to find its humor within the realities of the friendship it portrays. Two girls who didn't party in high school, because they were working to get into good colleges, discover that all the party kids got into good colleges, too. They decide to redeem themselves by going to the end of the year house party. A cast of largely new names makes it easy to feel as though you are watching real high schoolers out on their night before graduation. The movie is so much more than a movie about a party - it shows how women, no matter what their age, can do whatever they set their minds to.
2 Mean Girls (2004)
Truly an instant classic, this movie follows Cady, a girl who has been homeschooled in Africa until her junior year of high school. When she enters the confines of American public school, she is welcomed to the world of cliques, rumors, drama, and rules she never knew existed. It's very easy to get swept up and lose yourself along the way; Cady learns this the hard way. Written by Tina Fey, the comedic genius within the script is undeniable.
1 Easy A (2010)
When doing a favor for a friend, Olive ends up in a scheme she never meant to be a part of. A riff on The Scarlet Letter, a star-studded cast takes on a great story of a high school girl who just wants to find a genuine connection with someone, but ends up becoming the center of the drama at her high school. It makes fun of 80's high school movies and portrays how hard it can be to be a high schooler no matter what your age, gender, sexuality, religion, or upbringing.
