10 Obscure (But Awesome) Rom-Com Movies You Can Stream Today On Amazon Prime

Everyone needs a little romance sometimes, and when you do, romantic comedies can be a wonderfully lighthearted way to inject a little love into your life (through your TV screen, anyway). We've all heard of Bridget Jones' Diary or the classics of the '80s and '90s, of course, and should you want to sit back and stream a film that you already know, there are plenty out there to choose from.

But when it comes to picking something new to watch, something that is a little bit different, but still guaranteed to be great viewing, the choices can be overwhelming - especially on a streaming service. Rather than wading through the cheesy chick flicks, though, we've got the best of the lesser-known rom coms available on Amazon Prime, so you can snuggle up and get ready to have your heart warmed..

10 What If

Daniel Radcliffe stars as Wallace in this take on the old questions about love and friendship. Wallace is burned out on love, and swears off relationships, when he meets Chantry, a woman who already has a boyfriend. Assuming that nothing could happen between them, the two become close friends, and start to wonder if they are falling for each other. The questions that they are asking may be old (they were asked back in When Harry Met Sally, after all!) but the actors are phenomenal, and that brings everything necessary to this sweet flick.

9 Brittany Runs A Marathon

While this may be a rom-com, it's also a film about more than that, and will appeal to anyone who can't relate to the usual high-flying romantic heroines. Instead, it's about a hot mess - Brittany - who is struggling with pretty much every aspect of her life. She ends up being told by a doctor to take up running at around the same time as meeting a new potential man... and refreshingly, both of these stories are given equal importance in the film, not just the romantic one. Her journey to better herself is the real focus, with the romance on the side... just how it should be.

8 Book Club

Love and romance isn't just for twenty-somethings living in the big city, and Book Club proves it! With an all-star cast including Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda, this film takes a look at the lives and loves of women who have been married for decades. Divorce, boredom, and more is explored in this fun look at a group of friends dealing with love later in life - and while it may be more encouraging for young viewers to think that there's a perfect happy ending (and an unaffordably perfect apartment) in your 20s, older fans will enjoy how relatable Book Club can be.

7 The Big Sick

This cross cultural romance shows how the rom-com genre can do something a little bit different - while still creating the same charming effect that fans want to see. Based on a true story, it sees aspiring comedian Kumail fall for Emily after a one-night stand, and have to deal with the issues of explaining to his parents that he is not with a girl from their culture.

Then, when Emily gets sick, he has to deal with her parents, his parents, and at the same time, his actual relationship. Heartfelt and sensitive, The Big Sick is funny, heartfelt, and very, very, real.

6 Two Night Stand

What happens when a one night stand turns into a weekend stuck together? It may seem like a pretty standard rom-com formula, but there are worse things for romance than a bit of a formulaic script - after all, part of the fun is knowing what is going to happen. In Two Night Stand, a bad one night stand ends up turning into something more when the pair in question end up snowed in to the apartment the morning after - and there's nothing to do but to get to know each other better.

5 Heartbreakers

Have a little fun with this 2001 comedy starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver as a mother-daughter con artist team. It may not sound like the start to a traditional rom-com, but this has all the classic ingredients. Mother and daughter love to con rich men out of their money, and want nothing to do with love, until one of them starts to fall for a young bartender, who clearly isn't their usual type. Get ready for a predictable and silly story that is still all kinds of enjoyable to watch

4 The Jane Austen Book Club

This film may appeal most to fans of Jane Austen's novels, but even those who haven't read her work may find that they enjoy this fun flick. The film centers on a book club (shockingly enough) who love Austen, and whose loves lives are far from ideal.

Surprisingly, they soon find that their romantic troubles seem to be echoing those in the books, giving them an interesting way to look at things, and see if Austen might be the key to solving all their problems.

3 Paper Boy

This is yet another take on the most classic of romcom tales - a young couple who fall in love, but whose families may not be able to see past the differences in their social standing. However, this is a Bollywood film, and for either existing fans of the style, or newbies to the Bollywood world, it's a great choice, as a hardworking paper boy falls for the young rich girl that he delivers to.

2 The Love Letter

The Love Letter might be from 2013, but the concept already seems a bit outdated - the idea that printed newspaper advice columns are still popular! In this classic rom com, a romance advice columnist ends up writing to her own column about her best friend (who she just might be in love with, of course) who doesn't love his fiance. No prizes for guessing what happens here, but that doesn't make it any less charming in the end!

1 Destination Wedding

Finally, who wouldn't want to watch a rom-com starring Keanu Reeves? In this lighthearted flick, Reeves' Frank is on his way to a wedding despite nursing a broken heart himself - and when he meets another wedding guest who is in a similar situation, sparks fly. Everyone loves a good wedding setting for a rom-com, and given how wildly popular Keanu Reeves is, it's surprising that this film isn't a little more famous than it is.
