Newly released concept art from Avengers: Age of Ultron shows an alternate look for Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Released five years ago, Joss Whedon's second big Marvel team-up movie introduced a whole host of new characters, including Olsen's Wanda. She, along with her brother Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), was teased in the post-credits scene for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which showed the two Maximoff twins in the secret HYDRA facility where they gained their abilities. They spend a good portion of Age of Ultron as the titular villain's sidekicks, but by the start of the final battle, they switch sides and join the Avengers. While Quicksilver doesn't survive the film, Wanda does and has since become one of the key characters for the MCU's Phase 4.
Wanda was most recently seen in last year's Avengers: Endgame, where she memorably took on the powerful Thanos (Josh Brolin) all by herself. However, she'll really get her time in the spotlight in the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision. Currently slated to arrive in December of this year, the series will follow Wanda and her partner Vision (Paul Bettany) after the events of Endgame. This is especially intriguing to fans because, well, Vision isn't exactly alive right now. After WandaVision, Wanda will join forces with Doctor Strange in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
With so much on the horizon for Wanda, it's fun to take a step back and revisit where she started. Marvel concept artist Andy Park shared an alternate design of the character in honor of Age of Ultron's fifth anniversary. While Park was reminiscing about Age of Ultron, he also said, "I simply can’t wait for you all to see where we take her in the upcoming @disneyplus series WandaVision!" You can see the art down below:
While the red jacket is similar to the one Wanda dons during Age of Ultron's final battle, this new old design still looks quite different than her final look. Wanda's appearance has changed over the four films she has been in, but so far, she hasn't fully matched her comic book costume. However, that looks like it'll change with WandaVision, even if only temporarily. At the very least, it'll be an excellent Easter egg for fans.
As one of the most powerful Avengers (if not the most powerful), Wanda has certainly become a fan favorite over the years, and many are excited to see what Phase 4 has in store for her. She's come a long way since her debut in Age of Ultron, and only time will tell where she goes next. Between WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness, it's bound to be exciting.
