The original cast of Community is reuniting with creator Dan Harmon for a live table read and Q&A special. Originally airing from 2009 to 2014 on NBC, Community moved to the streaming service, Yahoo! Screen for its sixth and final season. Reaching that milestone, whether on network television or not, was an important one for the comedy series as it's been a long-running goal for Community fans that the show run for six seasons and get a movie.
Community follows a study group at a community college who across its six seasons grow into a family of sorts though shared laughs, grief, and paintball games. Its main cast includes Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, and Chevy Chase. Chase would later leave in season 4, Glover in season 5, and Brown in season 6. The offbeat comedy was never a massive hit for NBC, but its moderate success and passionate fanbase kept it on the air through Harmon's firing and rehiring. Though briefly revived for that all important season 6 by Yahoo, it ultimately didn't prove as profitable as hoped and wasn't renewed. Still, fans remain hopeful for a Community movie, with McHale as well as former director Joe Russo recently hinting a Community movie could yet happen.
Per Variety, the live Community table read will occur on Monday, May 18 at 2:00pm PT and will stream via Sony Pictures TV’s Community YouTube page. The episode featured will be season 5's "Cooperative Polygraphy" and it's being performed virtually over Zoom. Community's main cast of McHale, Jacobs, Brown, Brie, Pudi, and Glover are all returning as are series regulars Jim Rash and Ken Jeong. As for the Q&A portion, fans can submit questions via social media by tagging their posts with #AskCommunity and @CommunityTV. Fans will also be encouraged to donate to two charities: José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and Frontline Foods, both of which are working get food to frontline responders battling the COVID-19 outbreak and to those communities hit the hardest by the pandemic.
The episode being performed in the live table read, "Cooperative Polygraphy", is one where the study group is present for the reading of Pierce's (Chase) will. With Chase having left prior to season 5, his absence needed to eventually be addressed on the show, and in a way, the reading of this particular script allows Pierce to play a part in the table read even though Chase is clearly not returning. The season 5 episode also opened the way for Glover to next exit the show, having it revealed that Pierce leaves behind his fortune to Troy (Glover), but in order to collect, he must sail around the world. Perhaps, then, the occasion of this table read will have Harmon reveal how it Glover's Troy might return were a Community movie to ever happen.
Just recently, Community has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks all six seasons becoming available to stream on both Netflix and Hulu. There's certainly precedent for at the popularity of a show's earlier seasons on streaming networks leading to revivals. Combine that with the continued interested in a movie, and Community could return again real soon.
