Spider-Man: Mysterio's Hydro-Man Illusion Is A Far From Home Plot Hole

Spider-Man: Far From Home introduced Mysterio, a different type of villain who relied on technology to create chaos and take credit for saving the world. However, as impressive as his illusions were, the damage created by them ended up leaving a plot hole. The Marvel Cinematic Universe reached its peak with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which brought together all the heroes from the MCU to fight Thanos and his armies.

The closing chapter in the Infinity Saga was Spider-Man: Far From Home, offering a look at the world post Iron Man’s snap trying to re-adapt following the return of those who vanished at the end of Infinity War. Spider-Man’s first enemy after fighting alongside the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more was Quentin Beck a.k.a. Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), who initially posed as a hero coming from another dimension in the Multiverse.

Mysterio ended up being a completely different person: a former Stark Industries employee and holographic-illusions specialist who had a whole team of other former Stark employees helping him create attacks from the Elementals through holograms and drones. Even though his illusions were very convincing, looking back at everything they caused, they actually created a plot hole.

As mentioned above, Mysterio made the world believe that the Elementals were causing all types of chaos and he was the only one capable of defeating them. Beck claimed that the Elementals were superpowered entities from Earth-833 that arrived to this world through an inter-dimensional rift caused by the snap. These beings were formed from the primary elements – air, water, fire, earth – and their attacks were based on them. Sandman was the first, released in México; then came Cyclone, made to destroy Morocco; Hydro-Man was the first one Peter Parker had direct contact with in Italy; Molten Man manipulated the element of fire and was released in Prague; and then there’s Elemental Fusion, which manipulated all elements, though it couldn’t fully display its “powers” as Spider-Man exposed its true nature.

The Elementals were intimidating and created a lot of damage around the world – and that’s what created the plot hole. Once it’s revealed they were nothing more than complex and carefully elaborated holograms projected by armies of drones, all the damage caused by them doesn’t really make sense. Hydro-Man, for example, created water damage in Venice and left Peter soaked, and Molten Man destroyed the carnival with fire, which wouldn’t be possible with holograms. Spider-Man: Far From Home doesn’t give an explanation, thus creating a plot hole, but fans have theorized that Mysterio’s technology was so advanced, his drones were weaponized, allowing him to splash water or create fire damage as needed, as the holograms alone wouldn’t have been able to fool anyone without real consequences. It’s unlikely the MCU will answer this in Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 or any other film in the near future, so fans are left to find their own explanations on how Mysterio managed to destroy cities with his technology.
