The Matrix: Lilly Wachowski Hates Ivanka Trump & Elon Musk's Reference

Lilly Wachowski hates Ivanka Trump and Elon Musk’s The Matrix reference. The Matrix co-creator hasn’t directed a film since pairing up with sister Lana for 2015’s Jupiter Ascending, much to the dismay of fans who hoped she’d return for The Matrix 4. After being officially confirmed in the summer of 2019, the new installment in The Matrix franchise was met with much excitement by fans. However, right from the start, the fact that Lilly wasn’t going to return alongside Lana created numerous questions.

The pair had directed all three of the popular sci-fi films together and there has been some concern that a Matrix film without both siblings might not measure up. But Lilly has previously revealed she does not feel the desire to explore stories with heavy amounts of subtext ever since transitioning in 2016. As such, Wachowski has stayed busy writing and directing the LGBTQ TV series Work in Progress. Yet despite the filmmaker’s reluctance to return to The Matrix franchise as a creative component, she is not above remaining protective of the sci-fi lore she helped create.

This was exactly the case recently, as Wachowski responded to a brief Twitter exchange between Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump that referenced The Matrix’s choice between taking a blue pill or a red pill. Musk tweeted “Take the red pill." to which Trump tweeted back “Taken!” In response to both public figures utilizing a concept that she had co-created, Wachowski responded with a simple, yet clear “F*ck both of you." The complete Twitter exchange can be viewed below:

So far, exactly what the exchange between Musk and Trump is supposed to mean is not known. The concept of a decision between the blue and red pill originated in the first Matrix film, in which Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus character offers the choice to Keanu Reeves’ Neo. The red pill allows those who take it to see beyond the constraints of everyday life. It frees the user from the illusions of the dream world and presents instead an unvarnished, much more challenging reality. This is a major contrast to the blue pill, which keeps its user safe inside a blissfully unaware and largely ignorant state. If the blue pill represents the familiarity and comfort of routine, the red is a willingness to not have any punches pulled, and in doing so, the real world is revealed. It has been suggested that Musk and Trump’s Matrix reference is an allusion to voting Republican, which is traditionally represented by the color red.

Then again, given that Trump is the daughter of the current president of the United States, it basically goes without saying that she would be voting Republican in the upcoming U.S. presidential election anyway. Whatever the reasoning behind the Matrix reference, however, it is obvious that Lilly Wachowski is not a fan of either Trump or Musk and that she does not take kindly to their acknowledgment of her film franchise. Perhaps this mystery will deepen in the coming days, but for now at least, Wachowski has put an abrupt end to the conversation.
