The Vampire Diaries: 5 Times We Felt Bad For Elena (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Elena Gilbert was the main protagonist of The Vampire Diaries for the first six seasons until she was written out when she was put into a magical coma by Kai Parker. It's to Elena's credit that the show was so successful as she was a brave, charming and relatable character.

Although she didn't stick around for as long as other members of the main cast, she still left a lasting impression. She went through the wars during her time on the show, and many awful things happened to her. However, there were times when Elena took things too far and alienated her friends.

10 Felt Bad - When She Became A Vampire

Elena spent six years of her life surrounded by vampires and other supernatural creatures, but one remarkable aspect about her character was that she always wanted to stay human. She didn't want to become a monster and feed off of blood for survival.

However, in the Season 3 finale, Elena and Matt Donovan were trapped underwater and Stefan only had time to save Matt, leaving Elena to drown. However, she still had vampire blood in her system, therefore turning her into a vampire.

9 Hated - When She Helped To Kill Kol

Granted, Kol Mikaelson was the most antagonistic member of the Original vampire family, but in this instance, Elena wasn't acting in self-defense or protecting someone she loved. This was simply pure, cold-blooded murder, done out of necessity.

During the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries, everyone was searching for the cure, apart from Kol. However, Elena needed the map to find it. The only way to unlock the map was to kill vampires, and so Elena persuaded her brother to kill Kol so that his entire bloodline would die.

8 Felt Bad - When Jenna Died

At the beginning of the series, Elena had already suffered some terrible losses. Her (adoptive) parents had died just before the pilot aired, and she had witnessed everything. She and her brother, Jeremy, were placed into their Aunt Jenna's custody.

During the first two seasons, it was obvious that both Elena and Jeremy cared deeply about Jenna, and she them. However, near the end of Season 2, Klaus Mikaelson turned Jenna into a vampire and killed her, leaving Elena devastated at losing yet another parental figure.

7 Hated - When She Left Stefan To Drown

Admittedly, neither Elena nor Damon knew that Stefan was trapped in a metal box, drowning and suffering for months on end, but it was still weird how they didn't notice that he had gone completely off the grid for the whole summer.

In fairness, Stefan had told them he was leaving town, but that didn't mean to say that they couldn't contact him to see how he was doing. They had his cell number, they could have emailed, but Elena was simply too busy her alone time with Damon.

6 Felt Bad - When She Was Taken Over By Katherine

This was probably one of Katherine Pierce's most audacious schemes yet. In Season 5, she had become human and after being drained of the cure by Silas, she was ageing rapidly. As a result, Katherine was finally approaching death.

However, she was never going to go gentle into that good night, so she possessed Elena and masqueraded as her for weeks. The horrific thing was that none of Elena's friends noticed that she was acting differently, which hurt Elena more than anything.

5 Hated - When She Turned Off Her Humanity

Elena was the most compassionate character on The Vampire Diaries, so even though she became a vampire in Season 4, no one expected her to ever switch off her humanity as so many people would end up hurt because of her actions.

However, when Jeremy died, Elena couldn't handle the heightened emotional pain and so she abandoned her emotions. While her they were off, she hurt basically everyone she cared about; she tried to kill Bonnie Bennett, and she snapped the neck of an innocent woman.

4 Felt Bad - When She Was Cursed By Kai

The sixth season of The Vampire Diaries was a bit of a mixed bag, but one stand-out element was the season antagonist, Kai Parker. Unlike Silas or the travelers or even Klaus, Kai didn't take anything seriously, and killed just for kicks.

He was an incredibly well-written and wonderfully performed villain and fans couldn't get enough of him. Kai could also be incredibly sadistic, and placed Elena under a sleeping spell tied to Bonnie's life, meaning she would only wake up when her best friend died.

3 Hated - When She Erased Her Memories Of Damon

Elena may be good at many things, but handling grief wasn't her strong suit. She felt her emotions too deeply, which almost always led to her making bad decisions whenever she was in pain, such as forgetting Damon when he "died."

As well as making life incredibly difficult for Damon when he returned, Elena's actions also affected Caroline, who was struggling with Stefan being a jerk. Caroline needed someone to talk to who was in the same boat, and Elena took that away from her because of her selfishness.

2 Felt Bad - When Jeremy Died

The one person whom Elena loved more than anyone else (including Damon and Stefan) was her brother, Jeremy. Elena was his big sister, and so when their parents died, she took it upon herself to care for him and to make sure that he had a good life.

Over time, Jeremy eventually found out about the supernatural, and even became a Hunter. However, this meant that his Gilbert ring wouldn't work, and so when Silas killed Jeremy, he stayed dead. Elena was naturally devastated and felt more pain at his passing than anyone had seen.

1 Hated - When She Gave Katherine The Cure

Due to Katherine's role in her brother's demise, Elena had developed pure hatred for her murderous doppelgänger by the end of Season 4. Therefore, when Katherine tried to kill Elena in the season finale, Elena wasted no time in shoving the cure down Katherine's throat.

Elena was only acting in self-defense, but giving Katherine the cure was one of the show's biggest mistakes. It turned this badass vampire into a whiny, pathetic, powerless human whose only goal was to win her old boyfriend back, forever tarnishing Katherine's legacy.
