Superman's Villain Brainiac is About To Get Even MORE Evil

Superman has no shortage of powerful enemies, but Brainiac has to be one of the Man of Steel’s most formidable foes. Now, however, it seems Brainiac is no longer limiting himself to antagonizing Superman - he’s also taking on the Dark Knight.

The DC solicitations for September 2020 have provided a glimpse into the upcoming Batman Superman #12 - a series which, as the name implies, follows the team-up adventures of the two iconic superheroes. But this time, there’s a twist - Batman and Superman have actually gone missing. This issue will reportedly follow the other heroes of Gotham and Metropolis as they attempt to figure out where and why the World’s Finest have disappeared.

Not much is given away in the synopsis, but it does reveal that Brainiac is involved and has somehow been “corrupted.” Brainiac - who first appeared in Action Comics #242 back in 1958 - is a hyper-intelligent alien supercomputer that is often depicted as a kind of android. In some iterations, Brainiac was the one responsible for the destruction of Krypton, Superman’s home world. The cover art shows what is presumably Brainiac’s Skull Ship looming over the city, with Superman and Batman down below. The presence of the two heroes on the cover likely means that they will not be absent for the entire issue, but it could be a red herring.

The synopsis also hints that The Joker may be the mastermind behind Brainiac’s corruption. Hacking into an advanced extraterrestrial AI seems a bit out of The Joker’s league, but the Clown Prince of Crime is nothing if not full of surprises. He's pulled off some pretty grand and complicated (not to mention sadistic) schemes in the past, like the time he tricked Mr. Mxyzptlk into giving him the power to change reality. One thing is for sure - the knowledge and power of Brainiac combined with the insanity of The Joker spells trouble for the good guys.
