Space Force: 10 Worst Things General Naird Did | ScreenRant

This Netflix sitcom follows a group of government workers in the new military branch called Space Force. There is a big cast of characters throughout the series, but the show focuses on General Mark Naird (Steve Carell) as the leader of Space Force.

The entire staff of Space Force doesn't seem very qualified to do their job and the entire cast of characters make mistakes throughout the series, but General Naird is in charge and arguably one of the worse offenders from his job to his family life. Here are the worst things that General Naird did throughout the first season of the series.

10 Suspecting Dr. Mallory Of Being A Spy

The department wonders if there's a spy in their midst and General Naird starts throwing around accusations starting with Dr. Chan, which is completely baseless and only because Chan is Chinese.

When Dr. Mallory talks him down he discovers that Mallory has been sending encrypted emails and accuses him of being the leak. Although he at least has some reason to believe it, he still plays a private video of Mallory in front of everyone instead of figuring it out between themselves.

9 Ignoring His Daughter Erin

Throughout most of the series, General Naird has more to worry about than his daughter Erin and she often feels ignored. She's struggling to fit in at her new school, wanting to be with her father, and she tells her father this constantly but he can never make time for her.

He does have a busy and important job, but he rarely makes time for her and isn't a great dad because of it.

8 Upset When His Wife Wants An Open Relationship

During their conjugal visit, Maggie brings up that they should have an open relationship because she likes a guard at the prison and she can't imagine that Mark is okay with only being with her two days out of the year.

At first, he's really upset by it, old fashioned, and selfish about the proposal saying that he could never imagine it. Eventually, he comes around, but this initial immediate dismissal instead of talking to her is upsetting.

7 Racist Toward Dr. Chan

General Naird is constantly bringing up Dr. Chan's race and how he suspects him of being a Chinese spy without any proof or reason to suspect it other than he is Chinese.

Dr. Mallory always stands up for Dr. Chan reminding Naird that Chan is his number two, but he can only do so much and Naird never really lets up his issue with Chan's race.

6 Almost Ruining Dr. Mallory's Experiment

Naird volunteers to be part of Dr. Mallory's experiment when someone has to drop out and it's in danger of being shut down.

Naird selfishly tries to be a strong man who doesn't need to ask for help as he struggles throughout the experiment that tests how a group would react psychologically to being stuck in a small area as astronauts will be soon. He even goes on a run in a full astronaut suit and the team has to go get him after he passes out from the heat.

5 Not Caring About Erin Dating Bobby/Yuri

General Naird does show he's not pleased with his underage daughter dating a potential Russian spy, but other than the one moment where he's surprised and upset after learning this he doesn't really try to stop their relationship.

The relationship isn't shown much throughout the show, but as a father Naird should have been more concerned about his high school daughter dating someone a lot older than her who also doesn't seem to care much for her.

4 Not Understanding The Importance Of Science

Although Naird does befriend Dr. Mallory and begins to listen to him by the end of the first season, he still doesn't fully understand the importance of his role within Space Force.

General Naird is focused on what he knows and what he knows is war, frequently suggesting that bombs and guns in space could solve problems instead of science. It's frustrating to everyone around him, specifically Dr. Mallory.

3 Kidnapping The Guy Who Knew About The Launch

At the beginning of the first episode, Naird is on his way to work when a local says he must be nervous about the launch today. Naird responds that he has no idea what the guy is talking about and the guy says he recognizes it's supposed to be a secret but really everyone knows about what they're doing at Space Force.

There's a cut to Naird driving to the office and then the guy shows up tied up in the trunk of his car as he tells his employees to lock him up until after the launch.

2 Launching Before It Was Safe

Most of the scientific team told Naird not to launch on the day they had planned because they were not prepared, but Naird goes ahead and does it anyway.

Although it works out for him, it's still concerning. He does this again later when he pushes up the manned launch date and puts people's lives in danger on the mission.

1 Sending The Chimp And Dog To Space

When their satellite needs help in space Naird calls in the chimp and dog he had previously sent into space to get cute footage of them for marketing reasons.

He asks Marcus the chimp to do a spacewalk and repair the satellite. The show reveals that there had been no rescue mission for the animals who were fated to die of starvation in space.
