What Old Guard’s Luca Marinelli Could Look in A Metal Gear Solid Movie

A new piece of fan art shows what The Old Guard star Luca Marinelli could look like as Solid Snake in a Metal Gear Solid film. The art comes after series creator Hideo Kojima praised Marinelli’s work and said he thought the actor would be a perfect fit to play the famous video game spy.

While a Metal Gear Solid movie has been in the early works for some time, production has stalled indefinitely, due in part to general Hollywood scheduling complications in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to direct the project, which has had a finished script for some time. Despite production delays and setbacks, Vogt-Roberts has continued to express his excitement about the film and recently shared concept art Metal Gear Solid online in anticipation.

In response to Kojima’s recent claim that Marinelli could be the “spitting image” of Solid Snake “if he donned a bandana,” artist BossLogic revealed their idea of what the actor’s casting in Vogt-Roberts’s upcoming film could look like. “Wanted to quickly see what @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN saw. He knows how to pick'em,” BossLogic writes in a tweet showing off the fake movie poster, which features Marinelli in Snake’s trademark bandanna and stubble, as well as an earpiece for his famous CODEC radio.

Kojima himself has openly endorsed the Metal Gear Solid film project and supported Vogt-Roberts, saying that “no one” else could direct movie but him. The director himself has been stirring up excitement for the project online with his recent art posts, which are in celebration of the franchise’s 33rd anniversary. His tweets include one piece that shows Metal Gear Rex from above – perhaps the most famous iteration of the games' titular nuclear-equipped walking battle tank – while another illustrates a striking first-person take on the famous Psycho Mantis boss fight from the original Metal Gear Solid.

With the film’s director himself sharing amazing art from the franchise, it’s fun to see fans like BossLogic – who has been particularly prolific lately in the fake-video-game-movie-posters space – join in and share their work as well. Hopefully, Vogt-Roberts will be able to announce real progress on the film project sometime soon, which has been bogged down with various hiccups even before the coronavirus pandemic occurred. Regardless of who ultimately puts on the bandanna to save the world from nuclear holocaust when the movie gets made, Snake’s shoes will certainly be big ones to fill.
