Jackass star Steve-O taped himself to a billboard in Hollywood in an apparent act of self-promotion. The 46-year-old stunt man quickly became notorious among the numerous personalities involved with MTV’s hit series Jackass in the early 2000s. Shortly after the cancellation of Jackass in 2002, the first feature film involving the entire crew was a huge success. But as the Jackass brand expanded and more sequels to the first film were released, problems began to surface.
Steve-O’s behavior had grown alarmingly erratic as the result of a drug and alcohol dependency. By 2008, the Jackass star checked into a psychiatric facility after indicating to his friends that he might be suicidal. In the months and years that followed, Steve-O gradually began to get his life back on track. Today, he’s 12 years sober, vegan and continues to pursue the sort of high-risk stunts that he once did. There has been word that a fourth Jackass film has been confirmed, with a 2021 release date in place, but to date, not much else is currently known about the project.
While Jackass fans eagerly await the fourth installment in the franchise, Steve-O continues to pursue his own objectives. This was recently evidenced by a promotional stunt for his new “multimedia special,” Gnarly, in which he was taped to a billboard in Hollywood. Insisting that there was “zero chance” of him falling, Steve-O was removed several hours later by members of the Los Angeles Fire Department without charges. The stunt was a pretty humorous one, however, and fortunately, Steve-O posted photos of it to his official Instagram account before he was taken down. Both photos from the stunt can be seen below:
Fans of Steve-O will know this isn’t the first time that he’s quite literally gone to great heights to get his message out. Back in 2015, he climbed a construction crane in Los Angeles to protest animal abuses at SeaWorld. The protest – which involved shooting off fireworks and an inflatable whale – ended in his arrest and a 30-day prison sentence. He was later released from prison after serving just 8 hours. As for his most recent high flying publicity stunt, however, Gnarly is available to stream for $9.99 at his official website. The new comedy special involves appearances from the Jackass crew in addition to a variety of new stunts and Steve-O’s stand up routine.
As far as publicity stunts go, it’s hard to think of a current celebrity who’s able – or willing, to go to the same extremes as Steve-O. Love him or loathe him, there’s no denying that the Jackass star has faced an untold number of obstacles to get where he is today. Granted, the vast majority of those obstacles were self-imposed, but his ability to take stock of his life and turn things around once everything had fallen apart is an inspiration for many. He may not have taken the most conventional route to fame, but the bottom line is that Steve-O just wants to have fun and make people laugh. There are certainly far worse ways to get attention.
