Marvel’s Avengers Beta Weekend Starts With Mass Connection Issues

The beta for Marvel's Avengers was playable across all platforms for the first time today, and enough would-be heroes logged in to cause some server issues. Releasing next month, Marvel's Avengers is a superhero action game that takes the squad-based missions of games like Destiny and launches them into the Marvel Universe. Developer Crystal Dynamics promises that its core team of Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor will be expanded with free additions after launch. This includes the ever-popular Spider-Man, but the webhead will only be available on PlayStation consoles due to a controversial exclusivity deal.

While primarily an online game, Marvel's Avengers does feature a full story campaign that documents the aftermath of a tragedy known as A Day that split the Avengers team apart. Kamala Khan must reunite the heroes using abilities gained from the Terrigen Mists released during the tragedy. Along the way, the team takes on AIM, an outwardly benevolent technological organization with sinister ends in mind.

Today's Marvel's Avengers beta test overloaded any capacity Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics had in place. Players throughout the morning posted in a thread from Reddit user Hobbesenero in the game's official subreddit regarding constantly getting a message that they had no internet connection. Some players also reported problems even logging into the game's website in order to link their accounts and claim the beta's Hulk Hand Pickaxe rewards in Fortnite. The official Marvel's Avengers Twitter account confirmed that the developer was working on the issue at noon today, and then shared success in pinpointing the issue four hours later.

According to the post, there was a back-end server issue causing the wave of players to constantly disconnect, and that problem is now resolved. Of course, this is still a beta test, and some players are still reporting wonky matchmaking and other issues. However, because Marvel's Avengers is a massive multiplayer undertaking, these problems are perhaps to be expected. With only PS4 currently having a truly open beta - the Xbox One and PC beta is still open only to players with pre-orders -  it's possible the problem could come back when the floodgates open next weekend. Still, more players than not are now able to play through the beta's story missions, try out the multiplayer, and learn to stomach the not-quite-MCU accurate character models on display for each hero.

Marvel's Avengers doesn't give the greatest first impressions, either when seeing it in action or playing it for the first time. However, after a few hours, the game does settle into something that's worth experiencing for True Believers. The two boss fights in the beta's story content are appropriately bombastic, and the combat has a lot of variety once a few skills are unlocked. If Crystal Dynamics can keep the servers under control at launch, a lot of players may be surprised by the final product when it arrives in a few short weeks.
