Ubisoft & Sheepedia Cancel Mug After Hilarious Manufacturing Error

Ubisoft China, in collaboration with Chinese retailer Sheepedia, has produced a glitched-out real-life mug that has its handle on the inside rather than the outside of the cup, and fans are loving it. The companies are in the middle of launching a wide variety of Ubisoft-inspired merchandise featuring franchises like Rabbids and Just Dance. In what could be an inspired piece of marketing, Sheepedia released an apology statement announcing the cup’s cancellation due to a “bug” in the production process that resulted in the bizarre vessel. Not that Ubisoft needs any help marketing itself, with the success of its recent Ubisoft Forward presentation increasing hype for its upcoming lineup to new levels.

Ubisoft has a history of fans encountering bugs and glitches in its virtual worlds. One of the most notorious of these cases came when Assassin’s Creed: Unity launched in 2014. As a major title releasing in the holiday season, many fans got their hands on the game as soon as it released and were greeted by a horrendous smorgasbord of technical problems. Of these, some of the most memorable, and nightmare-inducing, were the glitches that prevented characters’ faces from fully loading, which gave Revolutionary France a decidedly zombie apocalypse look. The reaction was so bad, the studio even worried it had affected sales for Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, one year later.

It seems that Ubisoft China might be making a light-hearted joke at its own expense with this new bugged cup, according to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter. His initial post showcases the cup in all its glitchy glory but, in the longer thread, Ahmad goes on to explain Ubisoft China’s tendency poke fun at company’s past with buggy titles. To back up the statement, he posts a picture of a Ubisoft booth at a gaming event that shows a table seemingly clipping through the second story. Whether an intentional marketing scheme or not, the post reports that fans have flooded Sheepedia with requests for the unwieldy mug and the retailer is working with Ubisoft to find a way to fulfill their requests.

This isn’t the only piece of intriguing gaming news from China that Daniel Ahmad has covered on Twitter recently. The Black Myth: Wukong gameplay trailer went absolutely viral last week, in part due to social media users like Ahmad excitedly sharing the footage. The indie title is a gorgeous-looking action RPG that draws inspiration from the classic Chinese tale, Journey to the West. Made by Game Science Studio in Unreal Engine, the project seems to be taking inspiration for its combat from games like Dark Souls, though it is still very early in production.

Sometimes it is important to remember that gaming is about having fun, and this glitched cup, though probably unusable, seems like a sort of whimsical souvenir. Hopefully, Ubisoft is hard at work keeping bugs out of its games - and merchandise - in the future.
