Cranky yacht chef Tom Checketts from Below Deck Mediterranean has yet to win over fans thanks to his bad attitude. But as Tom himself unravels onscreen and his relationship with Malia unravels off-camera, many are curious to know more about this new addition to The Wellington crew.
Tom joined the crew halfway through the charter season at the request of Captain Sandy Yawn. Tom's hiring came after the original chef, Hindrigo "Kiko" Lorran, failed to impress the Captain. The crew of The Wellington was struggling after the chief stew was ousted due to bringing illegal drugs on board and failing to claim them. Tom's position as the new chef and Malia's boyfriend immediately caused drama among the crew, and his explosive outbursts have only made things harder for his fellow cast members.
Below Deck fans thought Tom would be a great addition, since he initially looked to be an English gentleman. But it turns out Tom is tightly wound and enjoys throwing a good tantrum almost every day. Beyond his bad behavior, what do we really know about Tom? The chef was born and raised in the UK. According to his Bravo biography, Tom knew he wanted to work in the culinary arts from a young age. Both his mother and father were chefs. He also told cameras that he loved trying new food. The reality star originally trained as a pastry chef and worked in some of the UK’s finest restaurants, which included Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant in Chelsea.
Tom is also well-traveled. During his younger years, he had a strong desire to explore the world and decided to backpack across Europe. The chef has nine years of experience in the yachting industry, but nothing could have prepared him for life on a hit Bravo show. As for outside hobbies, Tom is an avid racer in Ironman triathlons.
Although Tom and Malia seemed solid on the season, they have recently broken up. Malia posted some very cryptic memes alluding to the fact that she was single and Tom had cheated on her. Tom is usually a very private person who does not seem to mind what the media thinks of him. The last fans saw of him he was throwing a "strop" (British for tantrum) about the provisions arriving poorly wrapped. Malia tried to help calm him down but was eventually reprimanded by Captain Sandy. Fans will just have to keep watching the season for more clues about the breakdown of Tom and Malia's relationship.
Below Deck Med airs Monday at 9 pm ET on Bravo.
