Netflix is releasing a reunion special of the 1991 movie Father of the Bride. A remake of the 1950 film of the same name, the 90s version follows George Banks (Steve Martin) as he navigates planning a wedding for his only daughter, Annie (Kimberly Williams), with his wife, Nina (Diane Keaton), and zany wedding coordinator, Franck (Martin Short). The movie was incredibly popular and spawned a sequel, Father of the Bride Part II. In this installation, both Annie and Nina become pregnant at the same time, creating a larger and more complicated Banks family tree.
After more than two decades of near silence, a reunion is on the horizon. Netflix tweeted a video teaser sharing the news, setting the release date as September 25. The video leaves a lot to the imagination, though, as it doesn’t confirm which, if any, of the original actors will be returning for the special. Instead of using actors, the video is a screen recording of Frank’s email—with an invitation for a virtual Banks family reunion.
The teaser may not give any new information, but it connects to an earlier Instagram post from Nancy Meyers, who worked as a writer and producer on the film series. A few weeks before Netflix’s tweet, Meyers shared that something Father of the Bride-related would be heading our way soon. In the post, Meyers stated, “If he thought a wedding was a lot, how would he react to 2020?” referring to George Banks’ high-stress levels throughout the movies.
This post, along with the new teaser video, makes it pretty clear that the reunion will take place in the present day. Reunions and reboots are all the rage right now, particularly during the Covid-19 crisis, but some are better than others. There are shows and movies that are choosing to simply regroup for a virtual discussion, while others, notably Parks and Recreation, filmed an actual continuation of the storyline. There’s no word on which type the Father of the Bride special will be, but here’s hoping Martin, Keaton, and Short all reprise their hilarious roles.
