Immortals Fenyx Rising is being compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a lot after its gameplay reveal at Ubisoft Forward, and the game’s director is taking it as a compliment. It will be one of Ubisoft’s biggest cross-generation releases of the year when it launches just a month after the Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5.
Anyone who hasn’t been paying close attention to Ubisoft for the past month may know Immortals Fenyx Rising better as Gods & Monsters. That’s the name that Ubisoft first announced for the game when it debuted back at E3 2019. A cinematic reveal trailer shown at the event teased the game’s cartoony art style and Greek mythology influence, and even revealed its protagonist, Fenyx. Even before that, a leaked game then called Project Orpheus was said to have an aesthetic likeness to Breath of the Wild, but the extent of their similarities wasn’t known until Ubisoft Forward showed some gameplay that should be very familiar to fans of Nintendo’s recent masterpiece.
Immortals Fenyx Rising features mechanics like mountain climbing and hang gliding that are clearly inspired by Breath of the Wild, among other things. Commentary from people who saw the trailer fixated on the likeness, with varying degrees of understanding and indignation. Director Scott Phillips doesn’t seem to mind, though. He recently told GamesRadar that he finds it “cool” to be compared to what he considers “a masterpiece.” Phillips also named Ratchet and Clank, Super Mario Odyssey, and Studio Ghibli movies as inspirations on Immortals Fenyx Rising, saying that building on existing work is common to all art.
Breath of the Wild was hailed as one of the greatest games of all time upon its release, a distinction that some players say still holds true. Given that - and the many genuine innovations it brought to open-world RPGs - it’s no surprise that games are taking a page out of its book. Upcoming multiplayer RPG Genshin Impact has been similarly targeted for using mechanics and visuals pioneered by Breath of the Wild, though in its case, critics haven’t been quite as kind.
Phillips’ response to the Breath of the Wild comparisons is more acknowledgement than big studios themselves often give to what inspired their games, but it’s perhaps not surprising coming straight from the director. There’s no sense in trying to pretend that Immortals Fenyx Rising doesn’t take quite a few cues from Breath of the Wild, and there are certainly worse things to be compared to than a masterpiece.
Immortals Fenyx Rising will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, and PC on December 3rd, 2020.
