If someone asked a roomful of Warhammer 40,000 fans just what it is that appeals to them about the tabletop wargame, they'd likely get a different answer from every player at the tables. To some, the game is all about its tactical combat; to others, the enduring quality is the memorable and over-the-top setting lore. But one aspect of the game has a draw that reaches far beyond the combat arena: the ability to paint up your army in any color you like, determining their flavor and mechanics in the process. To those diehards, for whom Warhammer 40,000 is the world's most violent coloring book, Marvel's new series Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar has a unique variant cover that offers the same power over the book itself.
The upcoming miniseries is written by Kieron Gillen (Uncanny X-Men, DIE) with art by Jacen Burrows. The series stars Calgar, the legendary military leader of the Ultramarines. The Imperium of Man and its super-soldiers, the Space Marines, are the poster boys of Warhammer 40k; the Ultramarines are the poster boys of the poster boys.
But the righteous Ultramarines are far from the only Space Marines on the menu for 40k players. The power-armored zealots began as a series of legions that were broken up into an endless succession of chapters to prevent any one faction of Marines from amassing too much power. Each chapter has its own characterization and play style: the hardy Salamanders are masters of the flamethrower, the feral Space Wolves are futuristic Vikings, and the angst-ridden Blood Angels bear a vampiric thirst. Each also has its own distinctive color scheme, making sure that no two chapters look exactly alike once their armor has been painstakingly coated in acrylic hues. For the most creative artists, Warhammer encourages players to create their own chapters, blending existing rules and developing a paint scheme that no army in the galaxy has ever borne before. Marneus Calgar has a gift for those fans.
Like any major Marvel release, Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar comes with a set of stylish variant covers. The publisher just announced a special sketch variant cover, printed on card stock, with art from illustrator Max Dunbar (Champions). The art consists of a full-body portrait of a Space Marine. Printed in black and white, only ink outlines and a minimal background.
Readers have a chance to color in the Primaris soldier's armor any way they like: Salamanders green, Hawk Lords purple, even White Scars white for those artists who prefer to do as little as possible. To that Warhammer fan who's been longing to see their homebrew renegade chapter immortalized on a book cover: your chance arrives when Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar hits shelves in October.
