Black Panther's Wakanda Given Official Dictionary.com Entry

Black Panther's Wakanda has received an official entry from Dictionary.com. The website is an online dictionary that provides the meanings of thousands of English words and was first launched in 1995.

Wakanda is the country that King T'Chaka—and later King T'Challa—rules over in Eastern Africa. The country is known for its technological advancement and is particularly well known for its immense stock and use of the element vibranium, which is considered a miracle metal and has near limitless use cases. In addition, Wakanda has one of the foremost military forces in the world, with the Dora Milaje heralded as some of the fiercest warriors ever seen.

CBR reports that Wakanda has now received an entry on Dictionary.com under its Pop Culture Dictionary. Dictionary.com defines the country as the "home to the Marvel Comics superhero the Black Panther." The site also provides a nod to Chadwick Boseman, highlighting Boseman's role in Black Panther and emphasizing how he helped popularize the "Wakanda Forever" movement as a "gesture of Black excellence."

Dictionary.com's entry also includes historical background on the emergence of Wakanda as a term, and later provides examples of the word in sentences as well. The online dictionary mentions the importance of Wakanda within the Marvel universe in a separate section too. However, the site includes a note at the bottom of the page saying that the entry is "not meant to be a formal definition of Wakanda." Instead, Dictionary.com says that this is more of an "informal word summary" that gathers and summarizes the key elements of this term, in order to help readers better understand the etymology, history, and use case of the word. That being said, the online dictionary's disclaimer was definitively the right move; although Dictionary.com has put together the word's meaning to the best of its ability, Wakanda will always be a term and concept that transcends a simple dictionary definition. Rather, Wakanda has developed into something that means far more to countless people.

When Black Panther first debuted in 2018, it was a landmark moment and a film that instantly shot to fame. Audience members across the world were given a firsthand look at the country of Wakanda, which not only consisted of an abundance of natural resources—from lush valleys to rocky mountain ranges—but a humming capital city incomparable to anything else that had appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's clear that the country of Wakanda is one that's unparalleled for its beauty, history, and symbolism—and its entry in Dictionary.com is one that's truly well deserved.
