Warning: SPOILERS for The Boys Season 2, Episode 4
The Seven lost another team member in season 2 of The Boys — because Homelander kicked A-Train out. When the first season of The Boys launched in 2019, viewers were first introduced to Vought's powerful superteam known as The Seven. Led by Homelander, the team consisted of Queen Maeve, A-Train, Black Noir, The Deep, Translucent, and the newcomer Starlight. At the start of season 2, though, The Deep was still on sabbatical and Translucent was dead, opening the door for Stormfront to join.
Through the first several episodes of the new season, The Boys has continued to test The Seven. Stormfront is grappling for control of the team, while Homelander is feeling betrayed that he didn't have a say in choosing the new team member. This has put the powerful Supe on edge: He's been testing the loyalty of those within The Seven as a result and playing mind games with them. Homelander told Starlight to kill Hughie and nearly killed her when she refused, but he also outed Queen Maeve on public television to let her know he's aware of her girlfriend. In his latest move to shake up The Seven, though, it was A-Train who lost his spot.
Homelander delivered the news to A-Train after Vought had a meeting with fellow speedster Shockwave. The reasoning for Homelander's decision is because of A-Train's health. While fighting Starlight at the end of season 1, A-Train had a heart attack and only came out of his coma at the beginning of season 2. But, he was not the same Supe he was before the incident, which was a result of him amplifying his powers through taking doses of Compound V. Earlier episodes of season 2 showed A-Train struggling to run fast for long stretches, and Homelander recognized that his heart can't handle it anymore.
A-Train's diminishing abilities is just one part of the equation, though, as Homelander's attempt to keep the public perception of The Seven high played a part. Since the team is supposed to be the best of the best, having someone who Homelander thinks doesn't even crack "the top 20" fastest people on the roster doesn't make sense. There's even precedence for The Seven to switch out speedsters when they aren't the top runner anymore, as season 2 also teased Mister Marathon was once part of the team. Vought's plan is for A-Train to have a full press tour to say goodbye and get his own TV show, but that might not be what happens.
Homelander's decision to cut A-Train from The Seven came just before he went on TV and was asked about the lack of diversity within superheroes. Homelander refuted this notion, though, pointing to the diversity within The Seven, where A-Train is the lone Black member. If the #HeroesSoWhite conversation continues, Homelander getting rid of A-Train could backfire big time. Plus, it would surprising if A-Train goes along with Homelander and Vought's plan, so he could turn on them over the back half of season 2. Now, viewers will just have to wait for the next episode of The Boys to see what happens next — and possibly learn who will take A-Train's spot.
