Warning: SPOILERS for Enola Holmes.
Will Netflix continue with the story of Enola Holmes? Netflix has been home to many movies during the coronavirus pandemic, and one of those that couldn’t have a theatrical release and found its place in the world of streaming was Enola Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is one of the most popular and beloved literary characters, and the characters and cases from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories have been adapted to all types of media for over 100 years – and there have also been artists who have borrowed the characters and made their own stories.
Such is the case of Nancy Springer and the book series The Enola Holmes Mysteries, which introduced a third Holmes siblings. Enola Holmes is the youngest Holmes, who has lived with her mother all her life and stopped seeing her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft when she was around four-years-old. Enola’s career as a detective kicked off after her mother’s disappearance, which also made way for a reunion with her brothers after a decade of not seeing each other. The series is formed by six novels, published between 2006 and 2010, and now Enola has made the jump to film.
Simply titled Enola Holmes, the movie follows the premise of the first book, with Enola’s mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) disappearing, and Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) deciding to investigate on her own. Given that there’s enough source material to continue the young Holmes’ story and the movie leaving the door open for more, could there be a sequel in the near future? Here’s what to expect from Enola Holmes 2.
Netflix is no stranger to sequels, so a second Enola Holmes film is not impossible – and it all depends on streaming numbers, which are not made public. Enola Holmes has gotten mostly positive reviews, labeled “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and with critics praising Millie Bobby Brown’s performance, as well as Henry Cavill’s version of Sherlock Holmes and the film’s sense of humor. If Netflix decides to give Enola Holmes another movie to continue investigating more cases, the announcement would come by the end of 2020 at the earliest.
Enola Holmes began filming in July 2019, and by April 2020, Netflix had acquired the distribution rights, giving it a September 2020 release. Enola Holmes 2 probably wouldn’t go through a smooth production process due to the coronavirus pandemic, as many projects have had to be delayed. Another aspect to take into account are the schedules of the main cast: Millie Bobby Brown is still part of Stranger Things, which could go on for more seasons, and Henry Cavill is the star of The Witcher. If everything turns out well, Enola Holmes 2 could arrive at Netflix by the end of 2022/early 2023.
As mentioned above, Enola Holmes covers the first book of the series, The Case of the Missing Marquess, but with a couple of changes that still leave the door open for more adventures. By the end of the first film, Enola was still hiding from her brothers and reunited briefly with her mother – and her career as a detective was only getting started. Enola Holmes 2 could take the case of the second book, The Case of the Left-Handed Lady, while still following her efforts to avoid her brothers. As for Enola’s mother, in the books she doesn’t reappear and Enola discovers her whereabouts through a coded message on a magazine, but she could still appear in a sequel either in flashbacks or in another brief visit to her daughter.
