No Man's Sky Origins Finally Keeps Original Trailer's Promise 7 Years Later

The recent No Man’s Sky Origins update adds a lot of content to the popular exploration game, some of which makes good on promises from all the way back at the game's launch. The latest massive update was teased last week, hinting at a planet-sized roster of new additions and improvements.

In a brief announcement, No Man’s Sky Origins was delivered as an important step in the game’s ongoing evolution. Hello Games, the studio behind the initially controversial space sim, compared the upcoming update to Foundation - the first content drop for No Man’s Sky, which literally lay the foundation for all future patches. Similar to Foundation, No Man’s Sky Origins was said to become the beginning of something new for the game, serving as yet another starting point.

Today, Hello Games has officially shared the promised patch notes detailing the colossal No Man’s Sky Origins update 3.0. With the additions it makes, the game has finally kept a promise it gave seven years ago in the reveal trailer by adding sandworms. These new gigantic creatures can occasionally spawn on rare planets, making exploration even more dangerous. The whole fauna generation system has been overhauled, resulting in bizarre new lifeform combinations. On a rare occasion, planets can spawn robotic creatures that strongly resemble synthetic wildlife from Horizon Zero Dawn. Sadly, to allow the revamped system to operate properly, Hello Games had to reset the previously generated creatures that are now labeled as extinct. Not only the fauna but also alien flora has been drastically improved to ramp up the diversity of planetary vegetation.

Almost every star system in No Man’s Sky will greatly benefit from the new planetary generation system. The newly created space objects make a parade of picturesque scenery thanks to enhanced terrain and additional variations of environments. Inhabited planets remain unaffected by generation changes so that all existing player bases stay intact. Visuals, however, have been improved everywhere, resulting in better illumination, more diverse coloring options, and increased number of objects. Some planets can produce active volcanoes or gravitational anomalies while enhanced weather conditions can lead to tornadoes, firestorms, or even meteor showers. On top of that, huge planetary buildings can appear, containing enticing archives of alien knowledge.

There’s a lot more to be covered as No Man’s Sky Origins improves literally every aspect of the game including UI, portals, the famous Multi-Tool, animal behavior, star generation, and much more. It feels like Origins marks another big revolution after a series of updates that released earlier this year. They were mostly concentrated on introducing new content rather than revamping the existing one. For instance, the game was enriched with huge exo mechs as an additional way of exploring planets and making the whole process a lot more enjoyable.

Judging by the impressive number of improvements included in No Man’s Sky Origins, not only is Hello Games determined to keep all of its promises given years ago but also is doing its best to go beyond expectations. Now is arguably the perfect time to invest in the game as it has so much to offer. More importantly, all of the content drops continue being completely free - and there’s seemingly no end to the updates, which means that the universe of opportunities that is No Man’s Sky will keep expanding.
