Boba Fett and his armor have returned in The Mandalorian, and there's one big difference between his helmet and that of the titular Mando himself, Din Djarin. Although reported ahead of time, the return of Boba Fett to the Star Wars universe was still a major highlight and surprise from The Mandalorian season 2's premiere episode, "Chapter 9 - The Marshal." The older, scarred version of the character makes for an intriguing setup, not least because he is without his armor.
Of course, Boba Fett's armor does appear in The Mandalorian season 2, even before its (former) owner does. Now in the possession of Cobb Vanth, the lawman who gives the episode its name, the instantly recognizable outfit plays a key role in the storyline. There are a few neat touches and callbacks to the armor, with the rocket being used and the jetpack being set off, and it also does something for the first time in live-action: sees the targeting antenna on Boba Fett's armor actually being put to good use.
The Marshal has clearly worked out all the bells and whistles of Boba Fett's armor, as he is comfortably able to use the targeting system - known as a rangefinder - that is part of the antenna to aim the rocket on his jetpack, easily locking onto and hitting its target. Aside from finally revealing the true purpose of the antenna on Boba Fett's helmet, this is also a noticeable difference to Mando's own, which lacks the same technology as his counterpart. While Din's helmet does have some special features, including the ability to trace heat signatures, he has to rely on external devices for targeting enemies. This comes in the form of his Amban sniper rifle; as shown in both The Mandalorian season 1 and 2, Din is able to detach the sight and use it as a digital telescope to see off into the distance, and to target enemies when it's attached to the rifle.
Although Mando's method gets the job done, it means that his technology doesn't seem quite as advanced as that of Boba Fett. That actually makes sense for a couple of reasons. Although Boba Fett's rangefinder wasn't used during the original Star Wars trilogy, it is quite clearly established that he's among the greatest bounty hunters in the galaxy, so it fits that he'd have some equipment others don't. He's of high regard and likely earns plenty credits, so can have greater advancements. On the flip side of that is Din, whose Beskar armor in The Mandalorian season 1 wasn't quite as advanced. When he saw several Mandalorians using jetpacks, he even proclaimed that he had to get himself one of those, but at the time it was clear he hadn't yet been able to.
The Mandalorian did eventually give Din his jetpack, as part of its video game vibe, with him earning armor upgrades as he moves along through the narrative. That is something that could well continue in The Mandalorian season 2 and beyond, and it's possible that his own helmet could be given an antenna attachment and rangefinder, or some other kind of targeting system, and a bigger rocket to go with it. After all, he's seen up close what Boba Fett's armor is capable of, so it'd be understandable if he wanted a piece of that action.
