Final Fantasy 7 Remake: What Happened To Barret's Arm

Newcomers to Final Fantasy 7 Remake may be wondering how Barret Wallace lost his arm. The passionate Avalanche member's gun-grafted appendage has made the iconic hero a recognizable character since 1997, with many being aware of Barret prior to FF7 Remake, even without ever playing the original. Yet Barret's tragic backstory may not be as well-known as his classic image.

The leader of Midgar's faction of Avalanche has a big heart, despite his short temper. Barret still carries the brash demeanor and foul mouth he's known for in the original FF7, but FF7 Remake enhances Barret's warm yet complicated personality by giving more focus to his touching interactions with his young daughter, Marlene. Additionally, Barret cares deeply for the rest of his Avalanche team and even Cloud Strife, who Barret has a hard time trusting at first, due to the mercenary's history with the powerful industrial enterprise, Shinra.

Many questions about Barret can be answered from a stream of events that occurred prior to the story of FF7 Remake: how he lost his arm, how Marlene came to be in his care, and why he carries a strong hatred for Shinra. Barret's past will likely be shown fairly early on in FF7 Remake Part 2, as the second installment will likely stay true to - if not greatly enhance - Barret's important backstory, giving even more depth to his endearing character.

Warning: SPOILERS for the original Final Fantasy 7 below.

Barret was once married to a woman named Myrna in the coal mining mountain town of Mt. Corel. Although Myrna is never shown in the original Final Fantasy 7, Barret briefly mentions her when speaking of his regretful past. While Myrna was sick with an unspecified illness, Barret advocated for Shinra to build a Mako reactor in Mt. Corel, believing the townspeople's lives would be better with Mako energy, as this resource was rendering others like coal obsolete. He convinced the entire town, including one of his best childhood friends - Dyne - who was very much initially opposed, to cooperate with Shinra for the reactor's construction.

After the reactor's completion, FF7's eco-terrorist group Avalanche - which Barret was not yet associated with - occupied the Corel Reactor. Barret actually worked alongside the Turks to recover control of the reactor for Shinra. Yet in retaliation against Avalanche, Shinra destroyed the Corel Reactor while Barret and Dyne were away on business. Shinra took things a step further by burning down Corel Village, believing the townsfolk to be part of the rebel faction.

Myrna and Dyne's wife, Eleanor, were killed in the fire. Dyne and Eleanor were the true birth parents of the infant Marlene, who Dyne later believed perished with Corel's residents. Barret and Dyne returned to Corel. As they realized what terror was unfolding, they were gunned down by Shinra troops under the command of Shinra's Advanced Weaponry Division lead, Scarlet.

Trying to escape, Dyne fell off a cliff, with Barret barely grabbing him by the arm. Scarlet had her troops continue fire, shooting at Barret and Dyne's grip. Dyne fell, and Barret lost his right arm. Depressed from everything he lost, Barret found Marlene and decided to raise her as his own, believing Dyne to be dead.

Barret eventually found the will to get back at Shinra after Old Man Sakaki grafted a gun to his right arm. He learned more of Avalanche and headed to Midgar to join its fight against Shinra, eventually becoming the Midgar cell's leader in FF7. He also heard another man got a gun-arm on his left side and knew it must be Dyne, but he wouldn't encounter his childhood companion until after traveling with Cloud and the party to FF7's Gold Saucer.

Barret's devastating past sheds light on his loathing for Shinra, the organization that betrayed his trust by destroying everything he once knew and loved. His deep affection for Marlene is more than just a father's love for his adopted daughter; she is the only good that has come from his gruesome history and a huge reason why Barret fights for a better future. Barret's will to turn the hand that was lost by Shinra into a weapon to fight back against it is a testament to his dedication and strength in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, making him an ideal long-ranged warrior as well as a fan-favorite in the FF7 universe.
