Matt Smith's Sonic Screwdriver Was Replaced By Santa Claus

One Doctor Who comic revealed how Santa Claus made one of The Doctor's sonic screwdrivers. This revelation came at the end of a busier night than usual for the jolly toymaker, after The Doctor stepped in to save him from a sleigh-jacking and went on to help Father Christmas complete his annual rounds.

For some Doctor Who is as much a part of the holiday season as big dinners, decorating the house, lighting the menorah and spending time with family and friends. Since the series' revival in 2005, a Doctor Who special has aired nearly every year on Christmas or New Years Day and often coincided with the final story of an outgoing Doctor or some other important event. This year is no exception, with the 2020 special, Revolution of the Daleks, poised to redefine The Doctor's greatest enemy. This tradition has also extended to various Doctor Who media, with holiday-themed stories being published in various Doctor Who magazines and comic books.

"Silent Knight" by Tony Lee, with art by Paul Grist and Phil Elliott, was one such story. It found Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor unexpectedly arriving somewhere near the North Pole on Christmas Eve, just as Santa was being set upon by a gang of Roboforms; robot scavengers who followed various alien invaders, looting what they could in the confusion. These Roboforms, apparently sick of raiding London shops during the holidays, had apparently decided to go straight to the source and steal the magic bag containing all the gifts in the world. The Doctor was able run the thieves down, but burned out his sonic screwdriver in the process. A more worrying problem was that Santa's reindeer had been hurt during the chase and were in no condition to fly that night.

Thankfully, The Doctor still had his time-ship, the TARDIS, and was more than eager to act as Santa's chauffer for the evening. An extended montage, which played out without any dialogue until the final page, showed The Doctor and Santa making a lot of people happier over the course of the evening. When the night was over and The Doctor returned Santa to the North Pole, Santa revealed that there was one final gift left in his magic bag. It was for The Doctor himself and contained a brand new sonic screwdriver to replace the one he'd lost while stopping Christmas from being stolen.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that The Doctor and Santa Claus crossed paths. One year earlier the Eleventh Doctor claimed in the 2010 special A Christmas Carol to have a photo of himself with Albert Einstein and Santa Claus at one of Frank Sinatra's parties. (He also claimed Santa's real name was Jeff.) Santa Claus (as played by Nick Frost) went on to appear in the 2014 special Last Christmas, where he joined forces with the Twelfth Doctor to stop an invasion of psychic parasites.
